History. The area around the Moccasin Bluff site was long inhabited by Native Americans before European settlement began in 1833 where McCoy Creek meets the St. Joseph River. The village was platted in 1842 and incorporated in 1858, named for James Buchanan, the 15th U.S. president. Artist Gertrude Goodrich painted a WPA mural titled 'Production' in the Buchanan post office in 1941. An F2 tornado struck north of the city on April 12, 1979, damaging farms and homes without causing deaths. The 2020 census recorded 4,300 residents.

Local economy. Clark Equipment Company, formed in 1916, made truck axles, forklifts, front-end loaders, and heavy machinery; by the 1960s it was among America's 100 largest companies, employing over 3,500 at its Buchanan plant before leaving in the 1990s. When Clark departed it essentially donated its buildings to the city, and smaller businesses moved into them as Buchanan diversified. Electro-Voice, the audio equipment maker, moved to Buchanan in 1946 and was headquartered there until its 1998 merger with Telex Communications. Electro-Voice's Buchanan operation earned an Academy Award in 1963 for the model 642 Cardiline shotgun microphone, the first Oscar given for an audio product.

Culture and community. Red Bud MX hosts the annual RedBud National, an AMA Pro Motocross round held Fourth of July weekend that draws 30,000-plus fans; the track ran its first AMA National in 1974. The track's signature obstacle, 'LaRocco's Leap,' is named for local motocross legend Mike LaRocco. Pears Mill, an 1857 water-powered flour mill on McCoy Creek, operates for summer visitors.
