Burleson is a fast-growing Fort Worth suburb straddling Johnson and Tarrant counties in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, grown from a cotton-and-railroad depot town of 241 people in 1920 to more than 57,000 today. Its walkable Old Town district along Ellison Street preserves the interurban-era roots, and it is best known nationally as the hometown where Kelly Clarkson lived when she won the first season of American Idol.

About Burleson
History. Founded October 10, 1880, when the first town lot was sold after Grenville M. Dodge of the Missouri, Kansas & Texas (MKT) Railroad bought land from Rev. Henry C. Renfro for a depot on the Fort Worth-to-Hillsboro line. Named by Renfro for Dr. Rufus Columbus Burleson, president of Baylor University and Renfro's former mentor. A major fire on February 20, 1895 destroyed most of the business district. Incorporated as a city on May 21, 1912. The Northern Texas Traction Company interurban electric rail line (1912-1931) brought electricity and connected Burleson to Fort Worth and Cleburne for the first time. Barely a village for decades (only 241 residents in 1920), Burleson boomed after Interstate 35W opened, reaching 2,345 by 1960 and 47,641 by the 2020 census.
Local economy. Early economy was built on cotton, agriculture, and livestock; by 1900 the town had a newspaper (the Burleson Banner), an artesian well, and waterworks. Now a bedroom/suburban community within the DFW Metroplex with retail, distribution, and light manufacturing. Largest employers include Burleson ISD (~1,600), Walmart (~480), the City of Burleson (~459), H-E-B Grocery (~400), and the Jellystone/Pirates Cove RV resort (~400). Fort Worth Spinks Airport sits on the city's northern limits.
Culture and community. Independence Day celebration each July 4 with live entertainment, food trucks, and fireworks. Russell Farm Art Center hosts holiday-season events including Night of Lights, Breakfast with Santa, and Christmas at the Farm in early December. Old Town Burleson along Ellison Street is the historic downtown cultural and dining district. Pop-rock singer Kelly Clarkson graduated from Burleson High School, tying local music identity to her American Idol fame.
What makes Burleson distinct. Kelly Clarkson was living in Burleson when she won the very first season of American Idol in 2002. The town's interurban station once operated out of a drugstore whose proprietor doubled as ticket master, serving travelers pastries and sodas. A vintage welcome sign once billed Burleson as the '16th fastest growing town in Texas.' Burleson didn't appear on U.S. Census rolls at all until 1920. Other notable natives include Olympic volleyball player Stacy Sykora and former U.S. Treasury Secretary Robert B. Anderson.
A fast-growing suburban city on the southern edge of the Fort Worth metroplex, Burleson grew from about 2,300 residents in 1960 to more than 50,000 today.
