Township residents voted to incorporate on May 16, 1972, and the City of Burton officially formed on July 1, 1972. Began receiving Karegnondi Water Authority water on December 15, 2017, part of the Flint-area shift away from Detroit water.
Local economy. Grew as an affordable-land suburb serving the General Motors and Buick City workforce centered in neighboring Flint. Manufacturing and ancillary auto-supply operations expanded here through the mid-20th century, then contracted with the regional auto decline of the 1980s and 1990s. Second-largest city in Genesee County, with a population of 29,715 at the 2020 census.
