Carol Stream is a planned DuPage County village west of Chicago, built from farmland in the late 1950s by developer Jay Stream and named after his young daughter, making it one of the few U.S. towns named for the first and last name of a living person. Now a suburb of about 40,000 with a strong distribution and manufacturing base, it is home to Christian publisher Tyndale House and a major U.S. Postal Service processing hub.

About Carol Stream

Also known as. Village motto: "A great place to live and work".

History. The area was originally known as Gretna, where St. John Wahlund Catholic Church operated from 1853 to 1867. Developer Jay W. Stream (1921-2006), frustrated by red tape on a Naperville subdivision, was told to "build your own town" and began buying unincorporated farmland outside Wheaton in 1957. Incorporated on January 5, 1959. Named for Jay Stream's daughter Carol; she was nearly named Jacqueline, survived a 1957 car accident, never actually lived in the village, later moved to Arizona, and died in 2020.

Local economy. Top employers include Hearthside Food Solutions (about 650), FIC America Corp. (about 494), Grunt Style LLC (about 400), and FedEx (about 369). The U.S. Postal Service operates a sectional processing hub in Carol Stream handling ZIP prefixes 601 and 603, making the village name familiar on mail nationwide. Tyndale House Publishers, a major Christian publisher founded in 1962 by Kenneth N. Taylor (of Living Bible fame), is headquartered on Executive Drive. The village's identity is built on light manufacturing, food production, and distribution/logistics.

Culture and community. The Carol Stream Park District maintains dozens of parks and recreation facilities across the village. The Great Western Trail, a rail-to-trail path, runs through the community. Notable residents include actor Eric Petersen, NFL running back Justin Jackson, and former state legislator Doris Karpiel. Carol Stream resident Nina Jo Schmale was among the eight student nurses murdered by Richard Speck in Chicago in 1966.

What makes Carol Stream distinct. It is one of the few communities in America to take its name from the first and last name of a living person (Carol Stream, the founder's daughter). A farm in the Carol Stream area was the site of NBC's first outdoor telecast in 1954, tied to the NBC program "Down on the Farm" (associated with actor Eddie Albert). The village leans into a space-age theme with a park named for Neil Armstrong and a community center named for Buzz Aldrin. The founder's daughter, the village's namesake, never lived there.

A planned Chicago suburb founded in 1959 by Jay Stream and named for his daughter, designed so residents could live and work in the same community.
