Carson is a working-class, hyper-diverse South Bay city built on one of California's oldest Spanish land grants and powered by one of the state's largest oil refineries. It is a sports destination thanks to Dignity Health Sports Park on the Cal State Dominguez Hills campus, and its skyline includes the Goodyear Blimp lifting off from a base visible to millions of drivers on the 405 freeway. Once nearly named 'Dominguez,' the city incorporated only in 1968, making it one of Los Angeles County's newer municipalities.

About Carson
Also known as. "Future Unlimited" (official city motto). South Bay / Harbor Area city (regional identity within Los Angeles County).
History. The area was home to the Tongva people for thousands of years before European contact. Carson sits on Rancho San Pedro, granted by the King of Spain to Juan Jose Dominguez in 1784, one of the first (and oldest) Spanish land grants in California. The city was named for George Henry Carson, who married into the Dominguez family in 1857 and helped manage the rancho. In June 1960 residents first petitioned Los Angeles County to incorporate a city to be called 'Dominguez,' but industrial leaders opposed it and the effort failed. A united front of residents and industry finally won county approval, and residents voted to incorporate; Carson officially became a city on February 20, 1968.
Local economy. Major oil-refining center: the Carson refinery (built in the early 1920s, later operated by BP, then Tesoro/Marathon) is described as the largest refinery in California, processing roughly 275,000 barrels of crude per day. The Dominguez Oil Field, discovered in the 1920s, helped establish the area's petroleum identity. Home to California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH), a major public university and employer. Logistics and industrial hub given its location near the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. Sports and entertainment economy anchored by Dignity Health Sports Park on the CSUDH campus.
Culture and community. One of the most ethnically diverse cities in the United States, with a plurality Hispanic population plus large Asian (notably Filipino-American) and Black communities. Known for a large and influential Filipino-American population. Soccer culture centered on the LA Galaxy, whose home stadium is in Carson; the venue also hosted the LA Chargers from 2017 to 2019. Notable people raised in Carson include singer Ray J, rapper Baby Keem, actor Ashton Sanders, and pro wrestler Kia Stevens (Awesome Kong).
What makes Carson distinct. Carson's land grant, Rancho San Pedro (1784), is among the oldest in California, predating the city's 1968 incorporation by nearly two centuries. According to census-based analysis, Carson has been noted as an incorporated U.S. city where the Black population's median household income exceeds that of the White population. The Goodyear Blimp base has hosted at least nine airships since 1968, carrying names such as Columbia, Eagle, Spirit of America, and Wingfoot Two. The city was very nearly incorporated under the name 'Dominguez' before industrial opposition scuttled that plan. Carson's refinery is cited as the single largest oil refinery in the state of California.
A diverse, working- and middle-class suburb in the South Bay, known as a hub for Filipino-American residents and home to a large college campus and sports complex.
