Web Design for Carson City, Nevada

Carson City is Nevada's capital, an independent consolidated city tucked against the Sierra Nevada in Eagle Valley, named for frontier scout Kit Carson. Founded in 1858 and boosted by the 1859 Comstock Lode silver strike, it kept its compact 19th-century downtown and remains a government town where the Nevada Day parade still marks statehood every autumn.

AppWT works with Carson City, NV businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.

About Carson City

Also known as. Carson. CC. Nevada's Capital City.

History. Abraham Curry purchased Eagle Station in 1858 and renamed the site Carson City, betting it would become a territorial capital; the name honors mountain man and explorer Kit Carson. The 1859 discovery of the Comstock Lode silver strike in the nearby mountains fueled rapid growth. When Nevada became a state in 1864, Carson City was confirmed as the permanent state capital. The Virginia and Truckee Railroad connected the city to the Comstock mines at Virginia City, making it a commercial hub. By 1880 roughly 1,000 Chinese immigrants lived in the city, about one for every five other residents.

Local economy. State and local government dominate employment as Nevada's seat of government. Top employers include the Carson City School District, the Nevada Department of Transportation, the Nevada Department of Corrections, and Western Nevada College. Casinos such as Casino Fandango and Gold Dust West support tourism and hospitality. The city is an independent municipality that is also its own county (a consolidated city-county).

Culture and community. The Nevada Day Parade, a tradition since 1938, celebrates statehood (October 31) with marching bands, floats, equestrian groups, historical displays, and even Burning Man art cars. The Jazz & Beyond festival brings free concerts and themed showcases through the summer. The self-guided Kit Carson Trail is a roughly 2.5-mile walking tour past about 50 historic landmarks, including 1800s Victorian homes, museums, and churches. Mountain bike races and Sierra recreation are woven into local life.

What makes Carson City distinct. George Washington Gale Ferris Jr., inventor of the Ferris wheel, spent his childhood in Carson City. A 1991 downtown master plan barred new buildings taller than the Capitol within 500 feet of it. Coins minted here carry the sought-after 'CC' mark prized by collectors. One study found Carson City's average temperature rose about 4.1 degrees Fahrenheit between 1984 and 2014, among the largest such changes of any U.S. city.

Carson City Landmarks and Local Life

  • The Nevada State Capitol - an 1870s sandstone building at the heart of downtown
  • The former Carson City Mint - now the Nevada State Museum, which struck coins bearing the distinctive 'CC' mint mark
  • The Nevada State Railroad Museum - home to historic Virginia and Truckee locomotives and cars
  • The Stewart Indian School - a former federal boarding school campus now preserved as a cultural site and museum
