Web Design for Castle Rock, Colorado

Castle Rock is the seat and largest municipality of Douglas County, set on Colorado's Front Range halfway between Denver and Colorado Springs along I-25. The town takes its name and identity from the prominent castle-shaped rhyolite butte at its center, crowned each November by a giant electric star that has become the community's signature. Once a stone-quarrying settlement, it is now a fast-growing, affluent commuter community with extensive parks and trails.

AppWT works with Castle Rock, CO businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.

About Castle Rock

Also known as. The Rock (after the castle-shaped rhyolite butte the town is named for).

History. Founded in 1874 when the eastern Douglas County border was redrawn to its present location; early homesteader Jeremiah Gould donated 120 acres to establish the townsite. Named for the prominent castle-shaped butte near the center of town; settlement was driven by the discovery of rhyolite stone (not the hoped-for gold), fueling an active quarrying industry into the early 1900s. Incorporated as a town on April 14, 1881; the county seat had moved from Franktown to Castle Rock in 1874. The original Douglas County courthouse was destroyed by arson on March 11, 1978. Subject of the 2005 U.S. Supreme Court case Town of Castle Rock v. Gonzales, which held that municipalities cannot be sued under federal civil-rights law for failing to enforce a restraining order.

Local economy. A commuter economy: roughly 80% of residents work outside the town, with an average commute of about 28.6 minutes, many to the Denver Tech Center and Denver. High-income community with a median household income around $145,000 and median home values well above $600,000. Leading employment sectors include education and health care, professional/scientific services, and finance and insurance. Retail anchor is the Outlets at Castle Rock, marketed as the largest open-air outlet center in Colorado with over 100 shops and restaurants beside I-25. Historic quarrying legacy: locally quarried rhyolite ('Castle Rock stone') was used in area buildings, including the 1875 railroad depot.

Culture and community. The Starlighting tradition: a large electric star atop Castle Rock has been lit each holiday season since 1936, with the modern community Starlighting ceremony (fireworks, caroling, a Firehouse chili supper) organized by the Chamber since 1962. Douglas County Fair & Rodeo, a summer staple in Castle Rock featuring PRCA rodeos, Xtreme Bulls, mutton bustin', and 4-H/FFA exhibits; the Fair Parade dates to 1954. Outdoor-recreation culture built around roughly 75 miles of trails and thousands of acres of parks and open space. Golf heritage: The International, a PGA Tour event, was played at nearby Castle Pines Golf Club from 1986 to 2006.

What makes Castle Rock distinct. Castle Rock opted out of Denver's Regional Transportation District (voters chose to leave in 2005), so there is no RTD bus or light-rail service connecting the town to Denver. The hilltop star was switched to a 'V for Victory' symbol on August 14, 1945, marking V-J Day, and was relit in early 2020 as a symbol of unity during the COVID-19 lockdowns. Actress Amy Adams and NFL brothers Christian and Max McCaffrey were raised in Castle Rock. The town's Plum Creek facility pioneered advanced direct potable water reuse technology.
