Centennial is a suburban city in Arapahoe County in the Denver metropolitan area, one of the newest and largest cities in Colorado. It was created in 2001 in what was, at the time, the largest municipal incorporation in U.S. history, formed largely to keep the community from being annexed by neighboring towns. A lean "contract city" with low taxes, it is home to corporate headquarters, the world's busiest general-aviation airport nearby, and the Streets at SouthGlenn town center.

About Centennial
Also known as. Named for Colorado's "Centennial State" nickname (statehood in 1876, the U.S. centennial year).
History. The city was incorporated February 7, 2001, from unincorporated Arapahoe County, including the former Castlewood and Southglenn census-designated places. Residents had voted to incorporate on September 12, 2000, with about 77% approval, choosing the name "Centennial" on the ballot. With more than 100,000 residents at creation, it was the largest incorporation of its kind in U.S. history at the time. A major motivation for incorporation was to prevent annexation of the area by neighboring Greenwood Village. The city took its name from Colorado's "Centennial State" nickname, marking the state's 1876 admission to the Union in the centennial year of American independence.
Local economy. Arrow Electronics, a Fortune 500 company and one of the largest firms headquartered in Colorado, is based in Centennial. Other leading employers include Comcast, United Healthcare, United Launch Alliance and CommonSpirit Health. Companies headquartered in the city include National CineMedia, Emergenetics International and the National Cattlemen's Beef Association. The city runs on a lean council-manager "contract" model with limited taxing power, contracting out many municipal services.
Culture and community. The Streets at SouthGlenn is a mixed-use shopping, dining and residential town center; its Commons Park hosts summer concerts and holiday tree lightings. The SouthGlenn Chalk Art Festival draws more than 30 chalk artists for a day of street art and live music. Centennial Under the Stars, held in mid-August, features a laser light show, food vendors, live music and local craft booths. The area's Western heritage surfaces in rodeos, square dances and historical reenactments.
What makes Centennial distinct. Centennial's 2001 birth was the largest municipal incorporation in U.S. history at the time - a roughly 100,000-person community becoming a city almost overnight. Nearby Centennial Airport was the busiest general-aviation airport in the world in 2023, logging 360,725 aircraft operations. It hosts the second-largest IKEA store in the United States. The city is the headquarters of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority and of the National Cattlemen's Beef Association. Its council-manager government deliberately limits the city's power to levy and collect taxes, making Centennial a widely cited example of a low-tax "contract city."
