History. Land was swamp and wilderness until French, German, Belgian, and Irish immigrants cleared forests and drained the swamps in the early 19th century; earliest settlers arrived around 1837. The French reportedly named it 'Center Line' because it sat on the middle of three Native American (Potawatomi) trails from Fort Detroit to northern trading posts; the center trail ran from Detroit toward Utica. Historian Wesley Arnold traces the name to the Moravian Trail, forged by Native Americans who survived the 1782 Moravian massacre in Ohio and resettled near present-day Mount Clemens; the trail once ran where Sherwood Avenue is today. Was known as 'Kunrod's Corner' during the mid-19th century. St. Clement Church (established 1854) catalyzed permanent settlement by drawing Catholic immigrants who wanted a local place to worship. Incorporated as a village in 1925 (in the center of Warren Township) and as a city in 1936.
