History. Named for Fr. Pierre Francois Xavier de Charlevoix, an 18th-century French Jesuit explorer who, by tradition, sheltered on nearby Fisherman's Island during a storm. European-American fishermen settled the Pine River mouth in 1852; the 1853 'Battle of Pine River' was a clash between townspeople and Strangite Mormons from Beaver Island over jury duty. The town plat was completed by John S. Dixon in 1866; Charlevoix County was organized in 1869 with Charlevoix as county seat. Incorporated as a village in 1879 and as a city in 1905. Declared a U.S. port of entry in 1876 and grew into one of the Great Lakes' busiest lumber ports; the Charlevoix Sentinel newspaper was founded in 1869. The Carl D. Bradley freighter foundered in Lake Michigan in 1958 with heavy loss of life, a disaster deeply felt in the region (many crew were from nearby Rogers City).

In 1936 Ripley's Believe It or Not! featured Ironton Ferry captain Sam Alexander, who was calculated to have traveled about 15,000 miles at work while never getting more than roughly 1,000 feet from his home; by his 1941 retirement the figure neared 20,000 miles.
