About Charlotte

History. Land speculator Edmond B. Bostwick bought the site in 1835 from George William Barnes and divided it among H.I. Lawrence, Townsend Harris and Francis Cochran. The town was named for Bostwick's wife, Charlotte Lovett Bostwick, though she had preferred the name Charlotteville. Jonathan Searles became the first postmaster on March 17, 1838. Charlotte was designated the Eaton County seat in 1837, but county business was actually conducted in Bellevue until 1840 because Charlotte lacked the population and buildings. The first courthouse, a small frame structure, was built in 1845 after the county seat moved to Charlotte. Incorporated as a village on October 10, 1863 and as a city on March 29, 1871. The county outgrew its courthouse by 1880; architects Miles, Cramer and Horn of Toledo were hired in 1882, the cornerstone was laid in 1883, and the building was completed in 1885. Fire gutted the interior in 1895 and it was rebuilt. The Dolson automobile was manufactured in Charlotte from 1904 to 1907.
Local economy. The Shyft Group, known as Spartan Motors from its founding until 2020, is the city's primary economic anchor. It engineers specialty chassis, specialized vehicles, truck bodies and aftermarket parts for the RV, emergency response, government, defense and last-mile delivery markets. Shyft opened a new Charlotte facility in 2017 and hired hundreds of additional workers there; the company was later acquired by the Swiss firm Aebi Schmidt Group. Spartan RV Chassis operates from Charlotte at 1165 Reynolds Road. Interstate 69 runs directly through the city, 21 miles from downtown Lansing, which supports both commuting and freight-based employers. Agriculture in the surrounding Eaton County townships still feeds the county fair economy at the Eaton County Fairgrounds. Downtown Charlotte's historic commercial blocks house independent retail, offices and the ground-floor spaces of the Courthouse Square building itself.
Culture and community. Charlotte Frontier Days, founded in 1970, runs each September with a parade, a championship rodeo, arts and crafts, food trucks, live music and competitions. The Courthouse Square Association hosts the Frontier Days craft show on the lawn of the 1885 courthouse. The Eaton County Fair takes place in mid-July and has more than 170 years of history behind it. The Eaton Theatre opened in 1931 as a single-screen Art Deco house with a square marquee and vertical sign; it was later twinned, with the balcony converted into a second upstairs screen. The Charlotte Performing Arts Center hosts student music, vocal and theatre performances.
