Web Design for Chicopee, Massachusetts
Chicopee sits at the confluence of the Chicopee and Connecticut rivers in western Massachusetts, a former mill city built from several old factory villages that still carries the Latin motto Industriae Variae, 'varied industries.' Once home to America's first friction-match maker and the Union Army's largest sword producer, it is now defined by deep Polish and French-Canadian roots, kielbasa and pierogi makers, and Callaway golf balls. Westover Air Reserve Base, the largest Air Force Reserve base in the country, dominates its northern edge.

About Chicopee
Also known as. Crossroads of New England. Kielbasa Capital of the World.
History. Land was purchased from the Agawam people by William Pynchon in 1636 and long formed part of Springfield; Chicopee developed for nearly two centuries as farmland before cotton mills arrived starting in 1825. Incorporated as a town April 29, 1848 and as a city April 18, 1890, with George Sylvester Taylor sworn in as first mayor in January 1891. Chicopee was the first American producer of friction matches in the 19th century. The Ames Manufacturing Company of Chicopee was the largest producer of swords and cutlasses for the Union Army during the Civil War and a pioneer in bronze casting and machine tools. Bicycle-boom manufacturer the Overman Wheel Company employed well over a thousand workers at its 1890s peak, and automobile pioneers Charles and J. Frank Duryea did early gasoline-automobile work tied to the city.
Local economy. Historically a diverse manufacturing city, reflected in its official seal motto 'Industriae Variae.' Callaway Golf produces more than 5 million golf balls a year in Chicopee. Since 2013 the city has hosted the headquarters of the Chemex Corporation, maker of the pour-over coffeemaker whose design dates to 1941. A cluster of Polish-American food producers operates here, including Chicopee Provision Company (Blue Seal kielbasa), Millie's Pierogi, and Domin & Sons horseradish. Westover Air Reserve Base is a large regional employer, and the modern economy is otherwise a service mix of local businesses and national chains.
Culture and community. Strong Polish-American heritage, with the World Kielbasa Festival (begun 1974) featuring polka bands, a kielbasa-eating contest, and the crowning of Miss Chicopee; a giant 'King Kielbasa' sausage was made each year, reportedly reaching 623 pounds and 27 feet in 1994. French-Canadian and, later, Puerto Rican communities also shaped the city's food and festivals after generations came to work the mills. The Polish Center of Discovery and Learning at Elms College documents Polish heritage through artifacts, documents and photographs. The Basilica of St. Stanislaus, Bishop and Martyr, a 1908 Baroque Revival brownstone church, was designated a minor basilica by Pope John Paul II in 1991.
What makes Chicopee distinct. Author Edward Bellamy, whose 1888 utopian novel 'Looking Backward' was one of the era's best sellers, lived in Chicopee. Arthur MacArthur Jr., father of General Douglas MacArthur, was born in Chicopee. The city is threaded by four interstate highways (I-90, I-91, I-291 and I-391), reinforcing its 'Crossroads of New England' branding. Its population peaked at 66,676 in 1970 and has since settled around 55,000. The Ames works in Chicopee cast many well-known 19th-century bronze statues and cannons in addition to Civil War swords.
