Chula Vista, whose Spanish name means 'beautiful view,' is the second-most populous city in San Diego County, sitting between downtown San Diego and the Mexican border. Once the largest lemon-growing center in the world, it is now a fast-growing, highly diverse suburban city with a training campus that has sent athletes to the Olympics. Its coastal wetlands and an ambitious bayfront redevelopment give it both natural marshland and new waterfront ambitions.

About Chula Vista
Also known as. Lemon Capital of the World. CV. The Gateway to the Californias.
History. The Kumeyaay people lived in the area for centuries before Spanish arrival, part of a human presence in the region going back thousands of years. The name 'Chula Vista' ('beautiful view' in Spanish) was suggested by Sweetwater Dam designer James D. Schuyler; the first house went up in 1887. Residents voted to incorporate as a city on October 17, 1911. Lemon orchards made Chula Vista the largest lemon-growing center in the world for a time in the early 20th century. The relocation of Rohr Aircraft Corporation to Chula Vista in early 1941 turned the city into a wartime manufacturing hub, with roughly 11,000 workers building components for the B-24 Liberator; the population tripled from about 5,000 in 1940 to more than 16,000 by 1950.
Local economy. Public education and healthcare are the biggest employers, led by the Sweetwater Union High School District, the Chula Vista Elementary School District, and Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center. Aerospace manufacturing has deep roots from the Rohr Aircraft era, which evolved into later aerospace operations in the region. Small business forms the backbone of the local economy, supported by tourism, healthcare, education, and manufacturing. The Chula Vista Bayfront Master Plan is redeveloping roughly 535 acres of waterfront into hotels, parks, and a convention center to expand the tourism economy.
Culture and community. The annual Lemon Festival along Third Avenue in downtown celebrates the city's citrus heritage with live music, lemon-themed food, pie-eating contests, and family activities. Chula Vista is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in Southern California, with a large Latino population and food, festivals, and community events reflecting cross-border culture. The North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre is one of the largest outdoor concert amphitheaters in the United States and a major regional music venue. Sesame Place San Diego, a Sesame Street-themed park, and the OnStage Playhouse community theater add to the local entertainment scene. Coastal salt marshes and estuaries make the city a birdwatching destination along the Pacific Flyway.
What makes Chula Vista distinct. The city's Third Avenue McDonald's, opened in 1971, is cited as the first location to feature a McDonald's PlayPlace, at about 7,000 square feet. Despite being a large coastal-adjacent city, much of Chula Vista's shoreline is protected wetland and salt marsh rather than developed beach. The 'Lemon Capital of the World' title is a genuine historical distinction from an era when the city's orchards led global lemon output. Olympic and Paralympic athletes from around the world still train year-round at the city-owned elite training center.
Second-most populous city in San Diego County, with a diverse population and extensive master-planned communities on its eastern side.
