History. Settled by European Americans beginning in 1829; the area was originally home to the Potawatomi, who traded furs with French and English colonists. Originally known as 'Pumachug' and 'The Corners' -- the name imitated the 'pum-a-chug, pum-a-chug' sound of a cider mill and saw mill running at the main intersection. The name 'Clawson' comes from a misspelling of the surname of early settler John C. Lawson. Incorporated as a village on May 12, 1920, and as a city on June 12, 1940. Population peaked at 17,617 in 1970, then declined roughly 35% to 11,389 by the 2020 census.
Local economy. Small, fully urban residential suburb of just 2.20 square miles (all land) known for compact, older, affordable housing.
