Web Design for Clinton Township, Michigan

Clinton Township is Michigan's largest township by population, with 100,513 residents in 2020 packed into 28 square miles of Macomb County about 22 miles northeast of downtown Detroit. It wraps around three sides of Mount Clemens, the county seat, and its history runs from a 1782 Moravian mission on the Clinton River to a Hall Road retail corridor anchored by an open-air mall that lets you bring the dog. Eminem and the late J Dilla both called it home, which is not the resume most suburbs carry.

AppWT serves Clinton Township and the surrounding Michigan area from Livonia, Michigan.

About Clinton Township

Also known as. Clinton Twp. (the everyday short form). Michigan's most populous township. New Gnadenhutten (the 1782 Moravian mission that was the first settlement here). Huron Township (its official name from 1818 to 1824).

History. The first recorded settlement was New Gnadenhutten, founded July 22, 1782 by Moravian missionary David Zeisberger and his followers on what was then called the Huron River. Zeisberger was born in Moravia in 1721 and emigrated to North America in the late 1730s. The mission had 29 cabins and a chapel. Residents farmed, practiced trades, attended school and held religious services. Food shortages ran for three years and Chippewa resentment grew over shared hunting grounds. Major Arent DePeyster and merchant John Askins bought the settlement in March 1786, and the Moravians left on April 20, 1786. The Conner family stayed on as traders and interpreters. The area was organized as Huron Township on August 12, 1818. Because it kept getting confused with the other Huron River south of Detroit, the Michigan Territorial Legislature renamed both the township and the river on July 17, 1824 after DeWitt Clinton, governor of New York from 1817 to 1823 and the force behind the Erie Canal that brought so many settlers to Michigan. The post-mission settlement was known first as Casino, then as the Village of Frederick, which by 1818 had roughly 20 families, mills, hotels and tradespeople. The Clinton River Navigation Company tried to build a canal from Frederick to Lake Michigan starting in 1827. The successor Clinton-Kalamazoo Canal broke ground August 8, 1838 on a planned 216-mile route and stopped in 1843 after only 13 miles were dug. Remnants survive in Clinton Township and neighboring communities, and the canal was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. Cady, in the southwestern part of the township at Utica and Moravian Roads, was founded in 1833 by Chauncey G. Cady, who served as township supervisor and in the state legislature. It had a post office from 1864 until 1906. Clinton Township became a charter township in 1989. Its population passed 100,000 around 2016 and reached 100,513 in the 2020 census, with a 2024 estimate of 101,359.

Local economy. Retail is the township's economic signature, concentrated on the Hall Road (M-59) and Gratiot Avenue (M-3) corridors. The Mall at Partridge Creek, developed by Taubman Centers and opened October 18, 2007, is a 640,000-square-foot single-level open-air center with roughly 80 shops and restaurants. It has posted average sales of $539 per square foot, among the highest in the country. Henry Ford Macomb Hospital at 15855 19 Mile Road is a 361-bed acute care hospital with a Primary Stroke Center, cancer services, a birthing center and inpatient rehabilitation. It traces its origin to 1899 as the east side's first hospital. Macomb Community College runs two campuses here: Center Campus, opened 1968, and East Campus, opened 1996. The college enrolls roughly 15,946 credit students and serves about 59,000 people annually across all programs. The Macomb Daily, the county's daily newspaper, is headquartered in Clinton Township. The township reported about 100 businesses opening, expanding or relocating within its borders during 2025, alongside redevelopment of the Gratiot corridor including the former Regional Shopping Center property.

Culture and community. The Italian American Cultural Society, at 43843 Romeo Plank Road, runs a banquet and conference center and anchors the area's Italian American community. The Macomb Center for the Performing Arts, on Macomb Community College's Center Campus, books national recording artists, touring companies and local arts organizations. The Macomb Sports and Expo Center hosts the college's Monarchs teams plus conferences and events. Eminem lives in Clinton Township, and the producer J Dilla lived here for a period until his death in 2006. Kyle Connor, the Winnipeg Jets forward, was born in Clinton Township, as was racing driver Jason Hedlesky. Andrea Shaw, three-time Ms. Olympia, lives in Clinton Township.

What makes Clinton Township distinct. It is the most populous township in Michigan and the state's 8th-most populous community of any kind, yet it has no city government and no traditional downtown. It surrounds Mount Clemens, the Macomb County seat, on three sides. The township carried the name Huron Township for six years and was renamed only because mail and maps kept confusing it with the other Huron River south of Detroit. Its first settlement, a Moravian mission, lasted less than four years and was sold out from under its residents in March 1786. The Clinton-Kalamazoo Canal was meant to run 216 miles to Lake Michigan and got 13 miles before unpaid workers began tearing it up and carrying off the materials. The Mall at Partridge Creek is deliberately dog-friendly and provides four dog comfort stations, unusual for a mall operator's property. The Clinton River is formed inside the township from three separate branches. Two very different Detroit music figures, Eminem and J Dilla, have both lived in this one suburban township.

Clinton Township is a northern suburb of Detroit about 22 miles northeast of downtown, and the Clinton River that gives the community its name forms from three branches within the township before flowing east toward Lake St. Clair

Notable. Most populous township in Michigan, with 100,513 residents at the 2020 census.
