A predominantly Latino farming city at the eastern end of California's date-growing valley, Coachella sits 69 feet below sea level in the Colorado Desert. More than 90% of residents speak Spanish at home, and the city is officially bilingual. It lends its name to the world-famous music festival -- which, in a twist, is actually held next door in Indio.

About Coachella
Also known as. City of Eternal Sunshine. Gateway to the Salton Sea. Woodspur (original name).
History. Founded as "Woodspur" in 1876 when the Southern Pacific Railroad built a rail siding, where Jason L. Rector ran a mesquite-wood terminal shipping lumber to Los Angeles. Residents voted to rename the town "Coachella" in 1901; the name is believed to derive from a misprint of "Conchilla," Spanish for the little shells found in the valley's sandy soil. Incorporated as a city on December 13, 1946. Date palms were introduced to the valley by USDA botanist Walter Tennyson Swingle, who brought back 405 date-palm samples, including Deglet Noor, from Algeria in 1900. A center of farm-labor activism: Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers led strikes here in the 1960s and 1970s, and Harrison Street was renamed in his honor in 2018.
Local economy. Agriculture is the historic backbone -- citrus (lemons, oranges, grapefruit), table grapes, and dates. The surrounding Coachella Valley grows roughly 95% of all U.S. dates, giving the region its "date capital" reputation. Top employers include the Coachella Valley Unified School District, Spotlight 29 Casino, guitar-string maker Ernie Ball Inc., and Augustine Casino. Population of 41,941 (2020 census).
Culture and community. About 96.4% of residents are Hispanic or Latino, with a large community originating from the Mexican state of Sinaloa. The city is officially bilingual in English and Spanish, and roughly 90% of residents speak Spanish at home. Three signature annual celebrations: Cinco de Mayo, 16 de Septiembre (Mexican Independence Day), and 12 de Diciembre honoring the Virgin of Guadalupe. The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival is named for the city, though it is staged at the Empire Polo Club in neighboring Indio.
What makes Coachella distinct. The city sits 69 feet below sea level, and the Salton Sea to the south lies about 228 feet below sea level. Guitar strings played by countless rock musicians are manufactured in Coachella by Ernie Ball Inc. The globally famous Coachella festival that bears the city's name is not actually held within the city -- it takes place in nearby Indio. Film director Frank Capra is interred at the Coachella Valley Cemetery. State Route 86, once nicknamed the "killer highway" after hundreds of fatal crashes, was rebuilt into an expressway locals call the "NAFTA highway."
