About Coconut Creek
Also known as. Butterfly Capital of the World.
History. Incorporated on February 20, 1967, after seceding from Pompano Beach. Developer Robert E. Bateman coined the name by combining Miami-Dade's village of Indian Creek and Miami's Coconut Grove neighborhood. Grew rapidly as inland suburban development spread across Broward County through the mid-to-late 20th century.
Local economy. Seminole Casino Coconut Creek is the city's largest employer, with roughly 2,000 jobs. Other top employers include Broward College's North Campus, Broward County Public Schools, Publix, and Atlantic Technical College. The MainStreet district and The Promenade, a 23-acre open-air center, drive the city's hospitality and retail economy.
Culture and community. Butterfly World, opened in 1988, was the first butterfly house in the United States and remains the largest, with more than 20,000 butterflies across over 80 species. The annual Butterfly Festival at Sabal Pines Park (20th edition held in February 2026) features two stages of live music, carnival rides, and food. Seminole Casino Coconut Creek anchors the city's nightlife and entertainment. Notable residents include UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler, NFL receiver Calvin Ridley, and actor Bobby Cannavale.
What makes Coconut Creek distinct. Coconut Creek was the first city in Florida, and the 11th in the nation, certified as a Community Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation. The city has held Tree City USA status for about 20 years. Coconut Creek borders 'Mount Trashmore,' the roughly 225-foot Monarch Hill landfill; under a 2025 settlement the site is to be renamed and eventually closed, in part because the butterfly-proud city objected to the 'Monarch' name.
A master-planned Broward County suburb known for tree-lined roads, waterways, and butterfly gardens, and certified as a Community Wildlife Habitat.
