Columbus is Georgia's third-largest city, spread along the Chattahoochee River at the Alabama line, and grew from a Creek trading village into one of the South's largest textile-mill towns. Today it pairs a deep military identity (the adjacent Army post now called Fort Moore) with a reinvented downtown, where two old mill dams were removed to build what boosters call the world's longest urban whitewater course. It is also the city where Coca-Cola was invented and the hometown of blues pioneer Ma Rainey.

About Columbus
Also known as. Fountain City. The River City.
History. Muscogee County was established by the Georgia legislature on June 9, 1825; the city of Columbus was created in 1828 near Coweta Falls on the Chattahoochee, on the site of a former Creek Indian village. Columbus is one of the few U.S. cities planned in advance of its founding, laid out at the head of river navigation as a state-directed trading town. Located at the fall line, Columbus first boomed as a cotton-trading center, then harnessed the river's waterpower to become one of the South's earliest and largest textile mill towns. The Battle of Columbus was fought in April 1865, one of the last battles of the Civil War. Camp Benning (later Fort Benning, renamed Fort Moore in 2023) was established in 1918, adding a permanent military dimension to the city.
Local economy. Historically a cotton and textile powerhouse anchored by the Eagle & Phenix Mill; the textile industry declined sharply in the 1990s. Corporate headquarters city for insurance giant Aflac, banking company Synovus, and payments firm TSYS. Fort Moore (formerly Fort Benning), home of the U.S. Army Infantry and Armor schools, remains a dominant economic and cultural force just outside the city. Business leaders diversified the economy starting in the 1960s, moving beyond the 'mill and military town' image with cultural and civic initiatives.
Culture and community. Birthplace of Gertrude 'Ma' Rainey, the 'Mother of the Blues,' and of novelist Carson McCullers. Coca-Cola was developed by Dr. John Stith Pemberton, who lived in Columbus in the 1860s before moving to Atlanta. The Springer Opera House, built in 1871, is the official State Theatre of Georgia and hosted performers including Oscar Wilde, Will Rogers and John Philip Sousa. The RushSouth Music Festival, an Americana event on the riverbank, launched in 2023 with acts like Gov't Mule and Dawes.
What makes Columbus distinct. The 'Fountain City' nickname comes from the many decorative fountains installed around the city in the early 20th century. Coca-Cola inventor Dr. John Pemberton was wounded in the 1865 Battle of Columbus, an injury tied to his later interest in medicinal tonics. Removal of the Eagle & Phenix (2012) and City Mills (2013) dams re-engineered the Chattahoochee into a 2.5-mile continuous urban whitewater course with Class I-V rapids in the middle of downtown. The Springer is one of only about seven U.S. theaters designated a National Historic Landmark. When the dams were breached, archaeologists found glass soda bottles in the riverbed, including Coca-Cola bottles stamped 'Columbus, Ga.'
