Columbus is a small Indiana city with an outsized reputation as one of America's great showcases of modern architecture, thanks to a Cummins-funded program that brought world-famous designers to town. The seat of Bartholomew County on the East Fork of the White River, it is the global headquarters of engine-maker Cummins and home to schools, churches, and civic buildings by Eero Saarinen, I.M. Pei, and Robert Venturi. For its size, few American cities pack in more architectural landmarks.

About Columbus
Also known as. Athens on the Prairie. Athens of the Prairie.
History. General John Tipton and Luke Bonesteel purchased the land in 1820; the settlement was first called Tiptona. It was renamed Columbus, after Christopher Columbus, in March 1821. Bartholomew County was formed on February 12, 1821, and named for Lt. Col. Joseph Bartholomew, wounded at the Battle of Tippecanoe. The first railroad in Indiana was built to Columbus from Madison, Indiana, in 1844, spurring the city's growth. Cummins was founded in Columbus in 1919 by Clessie Cummins and grew into a global engine and power leader during and after World War II.
Local economy. Cummins Inc., the global diesel engine and power-generation company, is headquartered in Columbus and is the region's largest employer. Toyota Material Handling's North American headquarters operates just south of the city. Historic manufacturers included Arvin Industries, Noblitt-Sparks (maker of Arvin radios), and the Reeves Pulley Company.
Culture and community. A modern-architecture program initiated by Cummins CEO J. Irwin Miller had the Cummins Foundation pay architects' fees when clients chose designers from an approved list, filling the city with acclaimed public buildings. Featured architects include Eliel and Eero Saarinen, I.M. Pei, Robert Venturi, Cesar Pelli, Richard Meier, and Harry Weese. Seven buildings constructed between 1942 and 1965 are National Historic Landmarks, with roughly 60 more notable modern structures. In 1991 the American Institute of Architects ranked Columbus sixth in the nation for architectural innovation and design, alongside Chicago, New York, and San Francisco.
What makes Columbus distinct. Despite a population around 50,000, an AIA panel ranked Columbus sixth nationally for architecture, ahead of most major cities. The city is the hometown of former U.S. Vice President Mike Pence and NASCAR and IndyCar champion Tony Stewart. MythBusters co-host Jamie Hyneman is also a Columbus native. The city was named for Christopher Columbus and was the terminus of Indiana's very first railroad.
