Corpus Christi wraps around a semi-tropical bay on the South Texas coast, a windswept port city whose name, Latin for Body of Christ, dates to a 1519 Spanish sighting on the Catholic feast day. Today it pairs one of the nation's busiest energy ports and the retired carrier USS Lexington with barrier-island beaches, a fierce love of Tejano legend Selena, and the birthplace of Whataburger.

About Corpus Christi
Also known as. Sparkling City by the Sea. Corpitos.
History. In 1519, on the Feast of Corpus Christi, Spanish explorer Alonso Alvarez de Pineda charted the bay and gave it the name Body of Christ in honor of the Eucharist. The city was founded in 1839 by Colonel Henry Lawrence Kinney as Kinney's Trading Post, supplying a nearby camp. After the Mexican-American War it became an important transit point on the route from San Antonio to the Rio Grande Valley and for California gold seekers. The opening of the deepwater port in 1926 transformed the city into a major shipping hub for oil, petroleum products, and agricultural produce. Tejano superstar Selena Quintanilla-Perez, who made the city her home, was murdered here in 1995, cementing Corpus Christi as a place of pilgrimage for her fans.
Local economy. The Port of Corpus Christi is one of the largest U.S. ports and the deepest inshore port on the Gulf of Mexico, a leading gateway for U.S. crude oil exports. Energy dominates the economy, with refining, petrochemicals, and oil and gas exports central to the region. Military and defense employment includes Naval Air Station Corpus Christi and the Corpus Christi Army Depot. Whataburger was founded in Corpus Christi by Harmon Dobson in 1950 and kept its headquarters here for decades before moving to San Antonio in 2009. Tourism, agriculture, and wind energy round out the coastal economy.
Culture and community. Selena, the Queen of Tejano Music, is honored across the city, making Tejano and Mexican-American culture central to local identity. Whataburger, the iconic Texas burger chain, was born here and remains a point of local pride. The Texas Jazz Festival, one of the longest-running free jazz festivals, celebrates the city's music scene. Fresh Gulf seafood and coastal cuisine define local dining. Windsurfing, kiteboarding, and sailing are woven into daily life thanks to steady coastal winds.
What makes Corpus Christi distinct. Whataburger, now a Texas institution, was founded on the streets of Corpus Christi in 1950. The city has among the highest average wind speeds of any coastal city in North America and hosted the 1990 Windsurfing World Championships. The USS Lexington earned its Blue Ghost nickname because Japanese propaganda repeatedly claimed the carrier had been sunk, yet it kept reappearing in battle. Padre Island, just offshore, is the longest undeveloped barrier island on Earth. Actresses Farrah Fawcett and Eva Longoria were both born in Corpus Christi.
Corpus Christi is a Gulf Coast port city and the economic hub of South Texas, known for its beaches, birdwatching, and the Port of Corpus Christi, one of the largest ports in the country.
