History. Established in 1845 as Black River, then renamed Davisville after the community's first postmaster, and finally renamed Croswell in 1877 in honor of Michigan Governor Charles M. Croswell. Incorporated as a city in 1881, separating politically from Lexington Township. The Thumb Fire of September 5, 1881 burned more than a million acres across Sanilac, Lapeer, Tuscola and Huron counties in less than a day and killed 282 people, remaking the county Croswell had just incorporated in. The Croswell Agricultural Society Fair was established in 1884 and is still held each summer at the Croswell Fairgrounds, making it one of the oldest fairs in Michigan. A Croswell Sugar Company was organized in 1901 and the beet-sugar factory began operating in 1902; the Sanilac Sugar Refining Company of Croswell was one of six firms merged on August 20, 1906 to create the Michigan Sugar Company. In 1905 the Swinging Bridge was built across the Black River for about $300, using cable donated by the sugar company, so sawmill and sugar-factory workers could walk to work and reach River Bend Park. It began as two cables with boards laid across them; two more cables and fencing were added later for handrails. Croswell-Lexington High School opened in 1967, consolidating the Croswell and Lexington communities into one district that today serves roughly 1,766 students across five schools.
Local economy. Michigan Sugar Company's Croswell factory has run since 1902, which the company calls one of the oldest sugar factories in the world; it employs about 105 people, many with 30 to 40 years of service. The factory is midway through a five-year, $65 million capital project that raises daily slicing capacity from 4,000 tons to 6,000 tons, a 50 percent increase toward roughly 1.25 million tons a year. Michigan Sugar is Croswell's largest taxpayer and its biggest consumer of water and electricity; a local business owner told the company's own publication that "half the businesses wouldn't be here if not for them." Gielow Pickles, Inc. is headquartered at 100 Seltzer Road in Croswell, a five-generation family pickle company with canning plants in Croswell, Lexington and Port Huron and roughly 300 employees company-wide. Cotterman Co. is named alongside Michigan Sugar and Gielow Pickles as one of the city's major employers. The surrounding countryside is farmed for corn, wheat, oats, soybeans, sugar beets, peas and alfalfa hay.
Culture and community. Pioneer Days, Croswell's signature summer festival, runs three days in July with a car show, parades, fireworks and family events, all named for the Pioneer sugar brand. The Swinging Bridge Festival takes over the second weekend of August with a cardboard boat race under the bridge, kayak and canoe races, a parade, live entertainment and fireworks; it has run for more than 110 years. The Croswell Agricultural Society Fair, going since 1884, is one of the oldest fairs in the state and still fills the Croswell Fairgrounds every summer. Croswell-Lexington Community Schools compete as the Pioneers under the motto "Pioneers... Blazing a Trail to Excellence" -- a mascot borrowed straight from the sugar refinery's brand name. Swinging Bridge Park is a year-round gathering place with a splash pad, playground and disc golf, and it anchors the town's social calendar.
What makes Croswell distinct. Croswell holds one of only two fixed four-way traffic signals still operating anywhere in Michigan, at Howard Street and Sanborn Avenue. The city is named for a governor who never lived there -- Charles M. Croswell was born in Newburgh, New York, and the town took his name in 1877 while he was in office. Ernest R. "Cap" Graham was born in Croswell in 1886, moved to Florida to help drain the Everglades, was paid off in 7,000 acres of sugarcane, and served in the Florida Senate. His sons were Washington Post publisher Philip Graham and Florida governor and U.S. senator Bob Graham. Steeplechaser Leah Falland grew up in Croswell learning to run on her family's farm, won two national titles at Michigan State, and famously hit a barrier and fell from third to ninth at the 2021 U.S. Olympic Trials final. A sugar company built the town's most photographed landmark: Michigan Sugar donated the 1905 bridge cable, and later paid $150 for the two handrail cables added afterward. The Pioneer brand name from the refinery spread outward until it named the high school teams, local businesses and the city's July festival. Croswell has shrunk at every census since 2000: 2,467, then 2,447, then 2,322 in 2020.
