Web Design for Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio

Cuyahoga Falls is Summit County's second-largest city, a suburb directly north of Akron named for the dramatic waterfalls that once tumbled through its river gorge. New England settlers harnessed those falls for mills and, later, electricity and factories, and today the city is best known for its revitalized Front Street downtown and for Blossom Music Center, summer home of the Cleveland Orchestra.

AppWT works with Cuyahoga Falls, OH businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.

About Cuyahoga Falls

Also known as. The Falls (common local shorthand). Falls City.

History. Founded in 1812 by William Wetmore, who originally named the settlement Manchester on the Cuyahoga River. Renamed Cuyahoga Falls in 1828 to avoid confusion with another Ohio town called Manchester; 'Cuyahoga' is an Iroquois name often translated as 'crooked water.' By 1815 Wetmore had built the first of a series of dams and mills to harness the river's falls. Settlers used the falls' power for grist mills and later for generating electricity and running factories that made paper, wrought-iron staybolts, machinery, and other goods. The scenic Big Falls that gave the city its name were eliminated by a dam built in 1912; the smaller Little Falls remain.

Local economy. Now primarily a residential suburb within the Akron metropolitan area. Retains light industry including the manufacture of chemicals, vinyl products, tools and dies, steel molds, air filters, and packaging. Downtown Front Street has been revitalized into a walkable dining, brewery, and entertainment district with a Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA).

Culture and community. Blossom Music Center, the outdoor amphitheater that has been the summer home of the Cleveland Orchestra since 1968, sits on 800 acres within Cuyahoga Valley National Park in the city. Hosts a slate of heritage festivals: the Riverfront Irish Festival in June, Festa Italiana in July, and Oktoberfest on Front Street in the fall. The Cuyahoga Falls Fest features whitewater paddling on the Cuyahoga River's Upper Gorge (Sheraton Section). Front Street's outdoor amphitheater and riverside plaza host much of the city's social life and live music.

What makes Cuyahoga Falls distinct. Before the 1912 dam, the city's Big Falls reportedly dropped farther in total than Niagara Falls. In 1978 the city closed its main drag, Front Street, to cars to build a pedestrian mall to compete with suburban shopping malls; the experiment failed and the street was reopened to traffic in June 2018 to revive downtown. Blossom Music Center's placement inside a national park makes the summer Cleveland Orchestra concerts a rare mix of world-class music and wilderness setting.
