Delano is a farm town in California's San Joaquin Valley best known as the launching point of the 1965 Delano grape strike, where Filipino and Mexican American farmworkers united and the United Farm Workers was born. Surrounded by table-grape vineyards and citrus, it remains a heavily agricultural, majority-Latino community whose largest modern employers are two state prisons. Its Forty Acres and Agbayani Village are now National Historic Landmarks of the American labor movement.

About Delano
Also known as. Birthplace of the United Farm Workers movement. Cradle of the farmworker movement. a table-grape capital of California.
History. Founded July 14, 1869 as a Southern Pacific Railroad terminus and named for Columbus Delano, U.S. Secretary of the Interior from 1870 to 1875, who never lived there. A post office opened in 1874, and the city officially incorporated on April 13, 1915. On September 8, 1965, Filipino American workers of the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee (AWOC), led by Larry Itliong, walked off the table-grape farms, voting to strike at Delano's Filipino Community Hall. On September 16, 1965, Cesar Chavez's mostly Latino National Farm Workers Association joined the walkout, merging the two groups into what became the United Farm Workers. After a five-year strike and a nationwide grape boycott, workers won contracts with major growers in 1970. The movement helped lead to the California Agricultural Labor Relations Act of 1975, the first law guaranteeing farmworkers collective-bargaining rights.
Local economy. Agriculture dominates, and the area is especially known as a center for growing table grapes, along with citrus and almonds. Kern Valley State Prison (roughly 1,670 employees) is the single largest employer. North Kern State Prison (roughly 1,396 employees) is the second-largest employer. The Delano Union Elementary School District employs about 900 people. Major agribusinesses include Wonderful/Paramount Citrus, Columbine Vineyards, and Munger Farms. Adventist Health Delano anchors local healthcare with hundreds of jobs.
Culture and community. Delano is roughly three-quarters Hispanic/Latino, with a historically significant Filipino American community rooted in the farmworker generation. The annual Philippine Weekend celebrates Filipino heritage with a pork adobo cook-off, grand parade, barrio fiesta, and basketball tournament. A multi-day Cinco de Mayo Fiesta is held at Memorial Park. Harvest Holidays features a 10K run, softball, golf, and a kiddie parade tied to the farm calendar. Notable figures with Delano ties include labor leaders Cesar Chavez and Larry Itliong, El Teatro Campesino founder and 'La Bamba' director Luis Valdez, actor Dack Rambo, and soprano Benita Valente.
What makes Delano distinct. The town is named after a Cabinet secretary, Columbus Delano, who had no personal connection to the place; the railroad simply honored him. The Voice of America operated a large shortwave relay station at Delano from 1943 to 2007; built by CBS, it was the first Office of War Information transmitter to go on the air in WWII. Agbayani Village was built for the 'manong' generation of Filipino bachelors who had been barred by anti-miscegenation laws from marrying and had no families to care for them in old age. Winter brings thick regional ground fog known as tule fog that can drop visibility to near zero. Delano's sister cities span four countries: Kalibo, Philippines; Asti, Italy; Arida, Japan; and Jacona, Mexico.
