History. Settlement began October 4, 1833, when Captain David Scott and his family arrived from Ann Arbor; Scott platted the land. The community is named for DeWitt Clinton, Governor of New York from 1817 to 1822 and again from 1825 until his death in 1828 -- the same namesake as Clinton County itself. The State Legislature formally created DeWitt Township on March 23, 1836. The first township meeting was held at Captain Scott's house on April 8, 1836, where Welcome J. Partelo was named the first Supervisor. DeWitt Township originally covered the entire county. It was subdivided in four years: Watertown Township split off in 1837, Bingham and Ossowa (renamed Bath) in 1839, and Olive in 1841. DeWitt served as the county seat of Clinton County from the county's inception until December 1857, when the seat moved to Plumstead Hall in St. Johns pending a new courthouse. In the early 1900s the Lansing, St. Johns and St. Louis Railway opened the community to a new era of prosperity. Incorporated as a village in 1929. On October 21, 1930, a great fire swept the downtown business district, destroying eight historic and business buildings including the regionally prominent Clinton House hotel -- a blow that stalled the town's economic momentum.

The town lost the county seat to St. Johns in 1857 and never got it back. Steve Glew, a DeWitt farmer, smuggled rare Pez dispensers out of Eastern Europe and made millions reselling them. His story became the 2022 Netflix documentary "The Pez Outlaw." Olympic gold medalist Jordyn Wieber -- a member of the 2012 "Fierce Five" U.S. women's gymnastics team -- was born in DeWitt. Medal of Honor recipient Oscar G. Johnson (1921-1998) ran an 80-acre dairy farm near DeWitt for most of his life and is buried in DeWitt Cemetery. He single-handedly held his unit's left flank near Scarperia, Italy, after his entire squad was killed or wounded. The VA medical center in Iron Mountain, Michigan is named for him.
