About Eagan
Also known as. Onion Capital of the United States (historical, roughly 1885 to 1930).
History. The area was long home to the Black Dog Dakota village on the Minnesota River, named for its chief, before southern Minnesota opened to settlement after 1851. Early settlers were largely Irish, French-Canadian, German and from the eastern United States. Eagan Township was established in 1860 and named for Patrick Eagan, first chairman of the town board of supervisors, who farmed a roughly 220-acre parcel near the present town hall. Onion growing began around 1885 and the crop was shipped nationwide, earning Eagan the 'Onion Capital of the United States' title until about 1930, when poor harvests and southern competition ended the run.
Local economy. Thomson Reuters' West legal-publishing operation is based in Eagan with roughly 5,000 local employees. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota employs about 3,900 people in the city. Other major employers include Coca-Cola's Midwest bottling facility and Scantron. The sparsely developed north end near the freeways and MSP airport holds warehouses and distribution centers, including Minnesota's largest UPS hub (about 1,400 employees).
Culture and community. Cascade Bay is billed as the largest outdoor municipal waterpark in the Upper Midwest. Caponi Art Park is an outdoor sculpture garden that hosts summer concerts, dance and theater in its amphitheater. Annual events include the Eagan Art Festival in June and the Fourth of July Funfest.
What makes Eagan distinct. Eagan has been named to Money magazine's top-20 'Best Places to Live' list multiple times and cited as a top city for families. The Vikings headquarters sits on the campus of the former Northwest Airlines world headquarters. Lockheed Martin ran a defense plant in Eagan, rooted in the region's Univac/Unisys defense-electronics legacy, until it was closed around 2010 to 2012, cutting hundreds of jobs. Notable residents include former Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty, U.S. Representative Angie Craig, Olympic hockey player Natalie Darwitz, and actress-singer Laura Osnes.
