History. First settled in the early 1830s by the Reed family from New York City, for whom Reeds Lake is named. By the 1870s Reeds Lake was a popular day-trip destination; Manhattan Beach opened on the north shore in 1884 and Rose's Bathing Beach on the west shore in 1901. Ramona Park, a trolley-owned amusement park operated by the Grand Rapids Street Railway Company, ran from the 1880s until 1955 on the west shore, featuring a double-track wooden roller coaster, a theater pavilion, a miniature railway, and a boat livery. A newspaper naming contest in 1886 chose Ramona for the park, after the heroine of Helen Hunt Jackson's novel of the same name. The Village of East Grand Rapids was established in 1891 and the community incorporated as a home-rule city in 1926 with about 1,300 residents; voters chose to close and raze Ramona Park in the mid-1950s in favor of homes and shops.

Primarily an affluent bedroom community; the median household income is roughly $168,000, among the highest in West Michigan and frequently cited as the wealthiest community outside Metro Detroit. The local economy centers on residential property and the compact Gaslight Village commercial district of boutiques, restaurants, and services rather than heavy industry.
