Eastpointe is a dense inner-ring Detroit suburb of about 34,000 in southern Macomb County, straddling 8 Mile Road. About Eastpointe
Also known as. Halfway (historic name). East Detroit (former name, 1929-1992).
History. First settled by Irish and German immigrants in the 1830s; called Orange Township in 1837, then Erin Township by 1843. A post office named Half-way opened in October 1897 because the spot was the midpoint of the stage run between downtown Detroit and the Macomb County seat at Mount Clemens. Incorporated as the village of Halfway in December 1924, then as the city of East Detroit in January 1929. Residents voted to rename the city Eastpointe on July 1, 1992, seeking to associate with the affluent Grosse Pointes rather than Detroit. Population peaked at 45,756 in 1960 and has gradually declined since; the school district followed the name change only in 2017, becoming Eastpointe Community Schools.
Local economy. The American Power Boat Association has been headquartered here since its founding in 1903. Spirit Airlines was headquartered in Eastpointe until it relocated to Florida in November 1999. Art Van Furniture traces to founder Art Van Elslander, who opened his first showroom on Gratiot Avenue in 1959. Gratiot Avenue (M-3) is the main commercial spine, with I-94 and I-696 framing the small 5.16-square-mile city.
Culture and community. Cloverleaf Bar & Restaurant on Gratiot Avenue is a celebrated home of Detroit-style square pizza, tied to founder Gus Guerra, who earlier helped originate the style at Buddy's. Cruisin' Gratiot, a car show and cruise co-created in 1999, fills Gratiot Avenue every June with vintage cars, contests, and live music. The Erin-Halfway Days living history festival runs in late July at John F. Kennedy Memorial Park, alongside a Summer Fest and Ox Roast in August and Music in the Park at Spindler Park. A 1940 Frank Cassara mural titled 'Early Settlers' decorates the post office.
What makes Eastpointe distinct. In 2019 Eastpointe became the first municipality in Michigan to adopt ranked-choice voting, as part of a voting-rights lawsuit settlement. The 'pointe' suffix was chosen deliberately to link the city to the wealthy Grosse Pointes and away from Detroit's late-20th-century reputation. Alice Cooper (born Vincent Furnier) grew up on Lincoln Avenue and attended Kantner Elementary; NASA astronaut Jerry Linenger graduated from East Detroit High School in 1973. Joe Girard, recognized by Guinness as the 'World's Greatest Salesman,' sold cars at Merollis Chevrolet in the city.
