History. Potawatomi people had a village in the area around 1774; Euro-American settlers arrived about 1835, drawn by timber and Grand River water power. Investors dammed Spring Brook in 1836 and built a sawmill; the Old Red Mill followed in 1837 to grind corn by waterpower. The city dates its founding to 1837, while Wikipedia credits an 1838 founding by Amos and Pierpoint Spicer, Samuel Hamlin, and C. C. Darling -- pioneer surnames that still name local streets (Hamlin, Knight, Montgomery). The South Feeder Race was cut through in 1842 to power more mills. That canal is what physically created the island the downtown sits on. Three major fires -- 1864, 1874 and 1877 -- burned out much of downtown, which was rebuilt in masonry with fireproof detailing, producing the Italianate and Queen Anne blocks still standing. E. B. Frost sank Michigan's first successful artesian well around 1869, drilling more than 160 feet through rock, slate, clay and coal. Four more wells (Shaw's, Mosher's, Bordine's and Stirling's) followed that same summer and were converted into mineral-water hotels; at least 14 wells eventually operated. Organized in 1859, incorporated as a village in 1871, and chartered as a city in 1881. John B. Davidson Sr. founded the Horner Woolen Mills textile operation in 1921 -- described as the only textile mill in Michigan that spun its own yarn. It supplied roughly 95% of Major League Baseball uniforms before burning in 1969. Davidson later served as mayor and in the state legislature. The Island City Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 28, 2012, covering 139 buildings, sites, structures and objects, 92 of them contributing.

Nearly every MLB player in the mid-20th century wore Eaton Rapids wool: the Horner mill supplied about 95% of Major League Baseball uniforms until the 1969 fire. The Grand River runs north here, on its way from Jackson to Lansing -- the island exists because the 1842 South Feeder Race cut across that northward bend. Two of the grandest spa hotels, the Vaughan House (built 1872) and the Anderson House (1874), both ended in fire -- the Vaughan after just two years. The island geography was an accident of industry: the canal was dug for mill power, and it promptly fouled the drinking water, which is what drove E. B. Frost to drill the artesian well that started the spa boom.
