Web Design for Edmond, Oklahoma

Edmond is an affluent suburb just north of Oklahoma City that began as a railroad water stop and was claimed in a single afternoon during the 1889 Land Run. It is home to the University of Central Oklahoma, whose 1893 Old North tower is the city's icon, and it holds bragging rights to the first public schoolhouse in Oklahoma Territory. Edmond blends fast-growing suburban prosperity with a walkable downtown of murals, public art and one of Oklahoma's biggest Independence Day celebrations.

AppWT works with Edmond, OK businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.

About Edmond

Also known as. A Great Place to Grow.

History. The Santa Fe railroad established a coal-and-water station here in 1887 at what was thought to be the highest point in Oklahoma County, first called Summit. The station was officially named Edmond on March 28, 1887, honoring Edmond Burdick, a Santa Fe traveling freight agent. Edmond was settled in the Land Run of April 22, 1889, when the surrounding Unassigned Lands were opened to homesteaders. The first public schoolhouse in Oklahoma Territory, completed in August 1889, still stands in Edmond, as does its early church heritage. The Territorial Normal School, a teacher-training college, was founded in 1891 and grew into the University of Central Oklahoma; oil was discovered in the West Edmond Field in the 1930s and 1940s.

Local economy. Edmond Public Schools is the city's largest employer, with roughly 3,000 workers. The University of Central Oklahoma is one of the community's biggest employers and economic engines, with around 1,350 staff. The City of Edmond and health systems such as INTEGRIS, Mercy and OU Medicine are major employers. Grocery chain Crest Foods is headquartered in Edmond. Targeted industries include wholesale trade, light manufacturing, information technology and professional, scientific and technical services, within an affluent, well-educated OKC-metro suburb.

Culture and community. LibertyFest, founded in 1972, is a multi-day Fourth of July celebration repeatedly rated among the nation's top Independence Day festivals. Edmond Electric's 'Luminance' holiday-light walk is a signature winter event. The University of Central Oklahoma competes as the Bronchos, using an unusual archaic spelling with an 'h.' Downtown Edmond is filled with public art, murals and sculptures, including a bronze of Nannita R.H. 'Kentucky' Daisey, said to be the first woman to stake a claim in the 1889 run. Film productions including 'Rudderless,' 'American Underdog' and 'Reagan' have shot in the area.

What makes Edmond distinct. The slang term 'going postal' traces to Edmond: on August 20, 1986, postal worker Patrick Sherrill killed 14 people and wounded six at the Edmond post office before killing himself. Edmond claims the first public schoolhouse built in Oklahoma Territory. The city has produced an outsized roster of famous natives, including NBA star Blake Griffin, Olympic gymnast Shannon Miller, UFC champion Johny Hendricks, BMX legend Mat Hoffman and 'America's Got Talent' winner Darci Lynne Farmer. Edmond removed a Christian cross from its city seal in 1996 after a court challenge over the Establishment Clause.
