Erie is Pennsylvania's fourth-largest city and its only port on the Great Lakes, wrapped around a natural harbor sheltered by the Presque Isle sand peninsula on Lake Erie. Long an industrial powerhouse, it now blends manufacturing with a booming tourism scene that draws roughly four million visitors a year to its beaches. It is also one of the snowiest cities in America, sitting squarely in the Lake Erie snowbelt.

About Erie
Also known as. The Gem City. The Flagship City. The Bay City. The Lake City.
History. Takes its name from the Erie people, a Native American nation who inhabited the area until the mid-17th century. Founded April 18, 1795; surveyor Andrew Ellicott, who had helped lay out Washington, D.C., arrived in June 1795 to plan the city; it became a port in 1801. Lt. Col. Seth Reed and his family, Yankees from Uxbridge, Massachusetts, were among the first European-American settlers of the Presque Isle area. Served as homeport for Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry's fleet, including the flagship Niagara, which won the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812 in 1813 -- the root of the 'Flagship City' nickname.
Local economy. Manufacturing remains central: the Erie area has the highest concentration of toolmakers of any place in the nation, and more than 10 percent of the country's plastics injection molding is done there. Wabtec operates the historic Erie locomotive plant, the former GE Transportation works; Erie Insurance is headquartered downtown and Plastek Industries is a major local manufacturer. Healthcare and higher education are growing drivers, anchored by institutions such as LECOM (Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine), Gannon University, Mercyhurst University and Penn State Behrend. Tourism is an increasingly important sector, with Presque Isle State Park alone drawing over four million visitors annually.
Culture and community. A summer season of ethnic festivals reflects the city's immigrant roots: the Greek Panegyri, Polish Zabawa, Italian St. Paul's, German Heritage and St. Patrick's Irish festivals, plus AmeriMasala. The Erie SeaWolves play AA baseball at UPMC Park as a Detroit Tigers affiliate, and the Erie Otters compete in the Ontario Hockey League at Erie Insurance Arena. Discover Presque Isle is an annual late-July celebration of the peninsula, and the UPMC Sunset Series brings free live beach music through the summer. Downtown's restored Warner Theatre is a landmark performing-arts venue.
What makes Erie distinct. Erie is one of the snowiest cities in the United States, frequently ranked around #2 nationally, averaging roughly 104 inches of snow per season with a record season around 166 inches. A Christmas 2017 lake-effect storm dumped more than 65 inches of snow in about 36 hours -- the biggest two-day snowfall in Pennsylvania since record-keeping began over a century earlier. The now-retired Roar on the Shore motorcycle rally (2007-2019) drew more than 100,000 visitors a year and roughly a $25 million annual boost to the region. 'Gem City' refers to the gem-like sparkle of Lake Erie on sunny days and the quality of its natural harbor.
The fifth-most populous city in Pennsylvania and the largest in the northwestern corner of the state, Erie is a Lake Erie port and county seat known for heavy lake-effect snow.
