Escanaba is a Lake Michigan port city and the seat of Delta County, the third-largest city in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Built as a 19th-century iron-ore shipping port and lumber town, 'Esky' still runs a paper mill as its economic anchor while drawing visitors to its lighthouse, waterfront park and Yooper culture. It gave its name to the 2001 Jeff Daniels comedy 'Escanaba in da Moonlight' and hosts the Upper Peninsula State Fair.

About Escanaba
Also known as. Esky. The Iron Port of the World. banana belt of the Upper Peninsula.
History. Founded in 1863 by surveyor Eli P. Royce as a port town; incorporated as a village in 1866 and as a city in 1883. The name derives from the Ojibwe language; interpretations include 'land of the red buck' and 'flat rock,' referring to the Escanaba River. In 1863 the Chicago and North Western Transportation Company built the first iron-ore dock on Lake Michigan at Escanaba, making the port vital to the growing Chicago steel industry. Iron ore from the Marquette and Menominee ranges was railed to Escanaba for shipment for over a century; the last iron-ore shipment left the port in 2017.
Local economy. A paper mill is the city's largest employer, operated by Billerud since 2022. Historically the economy was built on iron-ore shipping and, in the 19th century, lumber processing. Tourism and regional retail (Escanaba serves as a hub for the central Upper Peninsula) round out the modern economy.
Culture and community. Escanaba hosts the Upper Peninsula State Fair; the U.P. won its own state fair after Governor Fred W. Green signed Act 89 in 1927, and the first fair opened September 17, 1928, on grounds that now cover about 120 acres with roughly 700 campsites. Pasties are a signature regional food tied to the copper- and iron-mining heritage, and the area celebrates broader 'Yooper' Upper Peninsula culture, dialect and slang. The 2001 film 'Escanaba in da Moonlight' (written by and starring Jeff Daniels) is set in the city; bluegrass artist Billy Strings included an instrumental titled 'Escanaba' on his 2024 album 'Highway Prayers.' Arts groups include the William Bonifas Fine Arts Center, the Bay de Noc Choral Society, Players de Noc and the Escanaba City Band.
What makes Escanaba distinct. Escanaba sits in the U.P.'s 'banana belt,' enjoying milder winters than areas to the north because it lies south of Lake Superior's heavy lake-effect snow belt. During the January 24, 1925 solar eclipse, Chicago radio station WJAZ broadcast from a portable truck in Escanaba to study the eclipse's effect on radio transmissions. The port shipped iron ore for more than 150 years before its final ore cargo departed in 2017.
