History. Named after local settler Ransom P. Essex and first platted in 1867. Built on ground where the Chippewa (Ojibwe) chief Nabobish and his people had settled; the surrounding land was ceded in an 1837 federal treaty (per Hampton Township history). The Essexville post office opened February 27, 1871. Incorporated as a village in 1883 within Hampton Township, then incorporated as a city in 1934. Michigan's first successful beet-sugar factory was built here in 1898; Governor Hazen S. Pingree attended the start of the state's first beet-sugar harvest on October 17, 1898.
Local economy. Early economy rested on the Saginaw River: fishing, lumber and sawmills (from 1867), salt, coal, and agriculture. Sugar-beet processing has been rooted here since the 1898 plant; the region remains part of Michigan Sugar Company's beet-growing and processing heartland (Michigan Sugar is headquartered in neighboring Bay City). Late-20th-century deindustrialization cut the population roughly 18% between 1970 and 1990, shifting Essexville toward a bedroom-community role in the tri-city metro.
Culture and community. Served by Essexville-Hampton Public Schools; Garber High School opened in 1964 (dedicated 1965) and its teams are the Dukes. Garber's "Love Fest" festival of the arts draws schools from across Michigan to perform One-Act productions on its stage.
