History. Settled in 1824 by Arthur Power, a Quaker from Farmington, New York; the settlement was first known as Quakertown before being renamed Farmington after Power's hometown in 1826. Sat at the junction of three Native American trails -- the Orchard Lake, Grand River, and Shiawassee trails. Dr. Ezekiel Webb established the first post office in 1825, becoming Farmington's first postmaster and physician. Incorporated as a village in 1867 and as a city in 1926; the Farmington Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. The Quaker settlers made the area an abolitionist stronghold: Arthur Power's son Nathan Power, president of the Oakland County Antislavery Society, served as an Underground Railroad conductor, and a Farmington-area site was added to the National Underground Railroad Network in 2012.
Local economy. Anchored by a revitalized downtown along Grand River Avenue, home to independent shops, boutiques, coffee houses, and diverse restaurants. The city undertook an extensive downtown renovation beginning in 2009, adding brick-paver sidewalks, the Farmington Pavilion, new lighting, and landscaping. A Saturday farmers and artisans market and steady event calendar drive foot traffic to the central business district.
Culture and community. The Farmington Founders Festival, a multi-day July tradition running for more than 50 years, features a parade, live music, carnival, and food vendors. The Farmington Farmers & Artisans Market runs Saturdays from May through November at the Sundquist Pavilion in Riley Park. Riley Park hosts Rhythms in Riley Park, Lunch Beats, the Harvest Moon Celebration, and a winter ice rink.
