Web Design for Fayetteville, North Carolina
Fayetteville is a Cape Fear River city defined by soldiers: it sits beside Fort Bragg, one of the largest military installations on Earth and home of the 82nd Airborne Division and Army Special Operations. Founded from two colonial trading settlements and named for the Marquis de Lafayette, it briefly served as North Carolina's capital and hosted the convention that ratified the U.S. Constitution. Today it blends Southern history, a growing downtown arts scene, and the hip-hop legacy of hometown star J. Cole.

About Fayetteville
Also known as. Fayettenam (Vietnam-era nickname tied to crime and drug problems along Hay Street near the base). All-America City (multiple National Civic League awards). Hometown of Heroes / Freedom's Home (for its bond with Fort Bragg soldiers). Cross Creek (the original settlement name, still used locally).
History. Grew from two settlements on the Cape Fear River: Cross Creek (a trading post dating to the 1750s) and Campbellton (established 1762), which merged and were named Fayetteville in 1783. First American city named in honor of the Marquis de Lafayette, the French general who aided the Revolution; Lafayette himself visited the city in 1825. Served as North Carolina's state capital from 1789 to 1793; a 1789 convention held here ratified the U.S. Constitution, and the state legislature chartered the University of North Carolina during a Fayetteville session. The Great Fire of 1831 destroyed much of downtown, including the old State House; the Market House was built on the ruins in 1832. In 1918 the Army established Camp Bragg on land west of the city; it became Fort Bragg and expanded enormously around World War II into a premier airborne and special operations post.
Local economy. Fort Bragg anchors the economy as the home of the 82nd Airborne Division, XVIII Airborne Corps, and U.S. Army Special Operations Command (Green Berets), pumping billions of dollars a year into the region. Cumberland County seat and a major regional retail and healthcare hub, with Cape Fear Valley Health among the largest employers. Manufacturing presence including tires (a longstanding Goodyear plant in the area), tools, and automotive-related products. Higher education and defense contracting tied to the base, plus Fayetteville State University (a historically Black university and one of the oldest state-supported schools of its kind) and Methodist University.
Culture and community. Hometown of Grammy-winning rapper J. Cole, who was raised in Fayetteville and named his Dreamville Foundation and album 2014 Forest Hills Drive after the city. Downtown arts district with galleries, studios, and museums drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors a year. Signature festivals including the Dogwood Festival in spring and the International Folk Festival celebrating the city's many nationalities. Sports include the Fayetteville Woodpeckers (Houston Astros Single-A affiliate) at Segra Stadium and the Fayetteville Marksmen minor-league hockey team. Deep military culture, with airborne heritage, parades, and a large veteran population shaping local identity.
What makes Fayetteville distinct. The base's name whiplashed: renamed Fort Liberty in 2023 to drop its Confederate namesake, then restored to Fort Bragg in 2025, this time honoring WWII paratrooper Pfc. Roland L. Bragg instead of the original Confederate general. It was the first U.S. town named for the Marquis de Lafayette, and one of the few he actually visited (in 1825). The Vietnam-era 'Fayettenam' nickname became so entrenched that J. Cole referenced the city's rough reputation in his music. J. Cole bought back his childhood home at 2014 Forest Hills Drive and has used it to house families in need through his foundation. The Market House is a point of ongoing controversy because enslaved people were among the goods sometimes sold there in the 19th century.
A military-anchored regional city in southeastern North Carolina, shaped by neighboring Fort Liberty and a revitalizing historic downtown.
