Web Design for Fontana, California
Fontana is an Inland Empire city in San Bernardino County that grew from citrus groves and hog farms into a WWII steel town, then reinvented itself as a sprawling logistics and warehousing hub. Kaiser Steel's mill once defined its identity and payroll before closing in 1983; its old site now holds a NASCAR superspeedway and steel operations. Fontana is also, improbably, the birthplace of the Hells Angels and the hometown that shaped rocker Sammy Hagar.

About Fontana
Also known as. Fontucky (a jab at its rural, working-class reputation). Steel Town (for the Kaiser Steel mill that defined it). F-Town.
History. Dedicated in 1913 and developed as an agricultural colony of citrus groves and vineyards, with 'Fontana Farms' promotions and, in the 1920s, one of the world's largest hog ranches. Transformed during World War II when Henry J. Kaiser founded Kaiser Steel (December 1941) and fired up its first blast furnace, nicknamed 'Big Bess' after his wife, in December 1942, one of only two major steel mills west of the Mississippi. Kaiser Steel produced steel for wartime Liberty ships and anchored Fontana's economy and identity for four decades. Facing overseas competition, the mill declined and shut down in December 1983, laying off thousands of workers. The Hells Angels Motorcycle Club was founded in Fontana in 1948, its original charter known as the 'Berdoo' charter after local slang for San Bernardino.
Local economy. A major regional logistics and trucking hub, sitting at the crossroads of interstates 10 and 15 and State Route 210, packed with distribution centers for national retailers and manufacturers. California Steel Industries continues rolling and finishing operations on part of the former Kaiser Steel site. The old mill site was redeveloped into a large employment center, including Auto Club Speedway and industrial parks worth billions in property value. Kaiser Permanente maintains a major Fontana medical center, a descendant of the health system Henry Kaiser built for his steelworkers.
Culture and community. NASCAR racing at the two-mile Auto Club Speedway (formerly California Speedway), built on the old Kaiser Steel land by Roger Penske and opened in 1997. Hometown of rock musician Sammy Hagar, 'The Red Rocker'; the renovated Fontana theater reopened in 2024 as Stage Red in his honor, with Hagar performing on opening night. The Fontana Days Run, one of the oldest half marathons in the U.S. and recognized as one of the fastest courses in the world thanks to its downhill slope. A diverse, blue-collar food culture, noted as one of the best places outside El Salvador to find pupusas.
What makes Fontana distinct. Fontana is the literal birthplace of the Hells Angels, whose founding 'Berdoo' charter was named for San Bernardino slang. Kaiser Steel's first blast furnace was nicknamed 'Big Bess' after Henry Kaiser's wife. The 'Fontucky' nickname stuck largely because residents of surrounding areas used it to distance themselves from the working-class steel town. A racetrack that hosts NASCAR now sits where one of America's biggest steel mills once poured molten iron. The Fontana Days Run half marathon is billed as one of the fastest in the world because the course runs gently downhill. The city's Route 66 giant orange stand, a relic of California's roadside-fruit-stand era, was moved into storage in 2022.
Fontana is a large working-class city in San Bernardino County's Inland Empire, shaped by its Kaiser Steel history and rapid suburban growth about 46 miles east of Los Angeles.
