Web Design for Georgetown, Texas

Georgetown is the seat of Williamson County, wrapped around one of the best-preserved Victorian courthouse squares in Texas and famous for the red poppies that reseed across town each spring. Its motto is 'Sincerely Yours,' and it has repeatedly ranked as one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States, driven in large part by the Sun City retirement community. The city blends a historic small-town core with rapid growth spilling out from Austin to the south.

AppWT works with Georgetown, TX businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.

About Georgetown

Also known as. Red Poppy Capital of Texas. G-Town / GTX. Takachue Pouetsu (Land of Good Water).

History. Williamson County was formed March 13, 1848, carved from Milam County after settlers petitioned the legislature; Georgetown was founded that year and incorporated in 1866. The city is named for George Washington Glasscock, who donated the land for the townsite. Southwestern University, chartered with roots dating to 1840 and established at Georgetown in 1873, is considered the oldest university in Texas; a railroad reached town in 1878. Cotton dominated the local economy from the 1880s into the 1920s, when Williamson County was among the top cotton producers in Texas, served by two national railroads (the I-GN/Missouri Pacific and the M-K-T 'Katy'). In the 1923-1924 Klan trials, Georgetown-based District Attorney Dan Moody won convictions against Ku Klux Klan members, described as among the first prosecutorial successes against the 1920s Klan. Lake Georgetown was created when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers completed its dam in 1979.

Local economy. Williamson County government is a top employer (about 1,582 employees), followed by Georgetown ISD (about 1,550) and the City of Georgetown (about 670). Sun City Texas, a Del Webb age-55-plus community selected in 1995, spans more than 4,700 acres and houses roughly 15,700 residents, a major engine of local growth. Georgetown was ranked the fastest-growing city in the nation in 2022 and 2023; its population passed 100,000 by 2024, up from 67,176 in 2020. In 2017 Georgetown announced it was powered by 100% renewable energy through wind and solar contracts, unusual for a Texas city. Fortune Small Business ranked Georgetown the second-best U.S. city to 'live and launch' a business in 2008.

Culture and community. The annual Red Poppy Festival each April draws tens of thousands of visitors to the courthouse square with live music, a parade, and a car show. The tradition traces to Henry Purl 'Okra' Compton, who brought red poppy seeds home from Europe after serving in World War I; his mother planted them and birds and bees spread them citywide. Georgetown was certified by residents and the Texas Legislature as the 'Red Poppy Capital of Texas' on April 25, 1990. The restored Palace Theatre on the square is a hub for community theater and live performance. The downtown square, one of the most complete Victorian commercial districts in Texas, hosts First Friday events and a lively dining and shopping scene.

What makes Georgetown distinct. Georgetown is one of the few places in the United States where red poppies naturally reseed themselves year after year. Sun City residents can legally drive golf carts on neighborhood streets under a Texas exemption. Inner Space Cavern was found by accident when highway crews drilled into it building Interstate 35. Retirement Places Rated named Georgetown the 'Best Place in America to Retire' in 2007.

Fast-growing Central Texas city about 30 miles north of Austin, centered on a Victorian courthouse square often called the most beautiful in Texas.
