Web Design for Goose Creek, South Carolina

Goose Creek is the largest city in Berkeley County and a fast-growing bedroom community just north of Charleston, named for a winding tidal creek said to resemble a goose's neck. Once the seat of the powerful colonial 'Goose Creek Men' and a wealthy rice- and indigo-planting district settled by Barbadians, it grew from a rural crossroads into a suburb of more than 45,000 after incorporating in 1961. Much of the city is occupied by the sprawling Naval Weapons Station, now part of Joint Base Charleston.

AppWT works with Goose Creek, SC businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.

About Goose Creek

Also known as. The Creek.

History. The area was settled in the 1670s; some of the earliest planters came from Barbados, drawn to the rich soil along a Cooper River tributary. It was the home base of the 'Goose Creek Men,' a politically and economically powerful faction that repeatedly challenged the Lords Proprietors and produced colonial governors James Moore and Robert Daniell. Eighteenth- and nineteenth-century wealth was built on rice and indigo; the Civil War, emancipation, and later hurricanes destroyed the rice-field dikes and ended the plantation era. A portion of the old Goose Creek area was incorporated as a new town in 1961, after which population jumped roughly fivefold, from 3,656 in 1970 to 17,811 by 1980. The population reached 45,946 at the 2020 census, making it the 7th-most populous city in South Carolina.

Local economy. Naval Support Activity Charleston / Naval Weapons Station Charleston, now part of Joint Base Charleston, lies substantially within Goose Creek and is a major employer. The city functions largely as a bedroom and commuter community for the greater Charleston metro area. Joint Base Charleston supports dozens of military commands and tens of thousands of airmen, sailors, soldiers, Marines, Coast Guardsmen, DOD civilians, dependents, and retirees.

Culture and community. The city recreation department hosts community events including a fall festival, a Fourth of July celebration, and a spring concert series. The popular BBQ & Brews Festival is a signature local event. The Green Barn at Carnes Crossroads hosts a seasonal farmers market, live concerts, and community gatherings. Goose Creek has produced pro athletes and entertainers, giving the small city an outsized pop-culture footprint.

What makes Goose Creek distinct. The city's name comes from a creek so sharply curved that early settlers said it resembled a goose's neck. Inside St. James Goose Creek, the full-color royal coat of arms of King George I is said to have saved the church from destruction when British troops moved through South Carolina in 1779-1780. During the Cold War the base's Polaris Missile Facility Atlantic (POMFLANT) stored more than 2,500 nuclear warheads, guarded by Marine Corps security. In November 2003 a notorious early-morning police drug raid at Stratford High School, with officers drawing guns and using a drug dog on handcuffed students, drew national outrage and a $1.6 million ACLU settlement; no drugs were found. Goose Creek is the hometown of Netflix 'Outer Banks' star Madelyn Cline and Major League Baseball players Justin Smoak and Matt Wieters.
