About Grand Ledge

Also known as. The Ledges. City of the Ledges. "Big Rocks" (English rendering of the Anishinaabe name for the sandstone outcrops). Seven Islands (historic resort-era name for the river islands).

History. Potawatomi, Ojibwe (Chippewa) and Odawa people used the site long before settlement, calling the formations a name rendered as "Big Rocks." They dug clams in the river, mined coal from the banks, fished for black bass, hunted deer, turkey, fox and bear, made maple syrup, and fired pottery from local clay. Henry Trench settled what became downtown in 1847; settlers named the village Grand Ledge in 1850 and opened a post office that year. The village incorporated in 1871 and became a city in 1893. John Burtch founded the Seven Islands Resort in 1872 with a hotel and a steamboat. Under J.S. Mudge in the 1880s it became the most popular resort in lower Michigan, drawing roughly 60,000 to 70,000 visitors a season, with the Island House Hotel (1878), around 75 boats on the river, and mineral wells promoted for their curative properties. Mudge built a pagoda tower called the Round House, with rotating stories and a centrifugal swing. Ice in the 1893 flood damaged its foundation and left it permanently tilted, earning it the nickname "Mudge's Folly." In 1888 Grand Ledge became the second city in Michigan, after Lansing, to install electric lights, which helped the resort run into the evening. A roller coaster built at the resort in 1891 is generally described as the first in the state. Frank D. Fitzgerald of Grand Ledge served as Michigan governor from 1935 to 1937, was elected again in 1938, and died in office in 1939, the first Michigan governor to do so. Fitzgerald Park is named for him. The last working coal mine in the area closed in 1945, ending an industry the Anishinaabe had started on the same riverbanks.

Local economy. Clay and shale were the town's industrial base. Grand Ledge Clay Products (1906-1986) made underground conduit for Chicago's telephone wires, much of which is still in the ground, then switched in 1937 to agricultural drain tile, chimney tops and sewer-pipe fittings. American Vitrified operated 1886-1966 and Baker Clay Company opened in 1914. Furniture and chairmaking: the Grand Ledge Chair Company was incorporated in 1888, built a 353-foot, three-story cream-brick plant in 1906, became a division of the Holabird Company in 1973, and closed in 1981. Crawford Chair Company (1902) and Hoerner Chair Company (1931-1943) also operated here. Coal mining along the river banks and mineral wells supported both industry and the resort trade through the late 1800s. Railroads arrived with the Flint & Pere Marquette in 1869. CSX Transportation runs the original line today, and the 1888 High Bridge over the Grand River is a well-known railfan spot. Modern freight and distribution: a Lowe's flatbed distribution and reload center on Winstanley Boulevard and an ADM grain elevator anchor the industrial side of town. For residents, the largest employment sectors are educational services, retail trade, and health care and social assistance. Grand Ledge Public Schools, whose district covers about 125 square miles across Eaton, Clinton and Ionia counties, is itself a major employer.

Culture and community. Yankee Doodle Days, held the third weekend in June by the Grand Ledge Area Chamber of Commerce: a parade down Bridge Street, Market on the Grand vendors at Jaycee Park, free kids' activities, live bands at the Fitzgerald ballfield and fireworks over Island Park. The Island Art Fair, a juried fine art and craft show running since 1974, held on and around the downtown island with 200-plus vendors. The Color Cruise and Island Festival, the town's fall festival, held in October at Island Park and timed to peak color along the Grand River, with a classic car cruise. The Grand Ledge Opera House at 121 S. Bridge Street, which reopened in 1993 after restoration and now houses a 1928 three-manual, 20-rank Barton theatre organ rescued from Lansing's Michigan Theatre. Rock climbing at Oak Park on the east bank, with close to 100 routes graded roughly 5.2 to 5.13. It is one of very few natural climbing areas in Michigan's Lower Peninsula. The Grand Ledge Comets: state championships in baseball (1977 and 1995), boys golf (1995), football (2000), and six consecutive girls gymnastics titles from 2008 through 2013.

What makes Grand Ledge distinct. Grand Ledge was the second city in Michigan to get electric lights, in 1888, beaten only by the state capital next door. The resort's Round House was knocked permanently out of plumb by ice in the 1893 flood and locals renamed it "Mudge's Folly." The word meant both a foolish undertaking and, in period usage, an ornamental garden structure. The roller coaster built at the Seven Islands Resort in 1891 is generally credited as Michigan's first. The city is mostly in Eaton County, but a sliver lies in Clinton County, and that sliver has no residents at all. Underground telephone conduit made by Grand Ledge Clay Products is still buried under Chicago. A town of under 8,000 people supports one of the only natural rock-climbing areas in Michigan's Lower Peninsula, and the ledges in the county park next door are off-limits to climbers. Fitzgerald Park is named for Frank D. Fitzgerald, the first Michigan governor to die in office. The Anishinaabe were mining coal and firing clay pottery on these riverbanks centuries before the town's coal mines and clay-products plants made the same two materials its industrial base.
