About Greenacres
Also known as. Greenacres City (former official name, 1926-1990).
History. Palm Beach Farms Company partners Frederick E. Bryant, Harold J. Bryant, and William Greenwood began buying thousands of Everglades-edge acres in the area around 1909. Massachusetts developer Lawrence Carter 'L.C.' Swain assembled about 320 acres and platted the original town starting in 1923 as a community for working-class families. Incorporated as 'Greenacres City' on May 24, 1926, with about 1,250 residents; the winning name came from a local naming contest. The September 1926 hurricane destroyed the civic building and community hall, and the 1928 Okeechobee hurricane damaged practically every building in town. Dis-incorporated in April 1945 under disputed circumstances, then reincorporated after residents voted to restore city status, becoming official again in 1947. Voters removed 'City' from the official name in a 1990 referendum, leaving the city simply named 'Greenacres.'
Local economy. Primarily a residential community of about 6 square miles with a mix of single-family homes, condominiums, villas, townhomes, and apartments across a range of price points. Retail, healthcare, education, and service jobs tied to the greater West Palm Beach metropolitan area. Median household income of roughly $62,917 in recent estimates. John I. Leonard High School, annexed by the city in 1994, is the largest high school in Palm Beach County and one of the largest in Florida.
Culture and community. Strongly multicultural: as of the 2020 census about 45% of residents are Hispanic/Latino, with notable Cuban, Colombian, and Caribbean communities. Fiesta de Pueblo, the Palm Beaches' largest annual Hispanic multicultural and arts festival, is held each January at Samuel J. Ferreri Community Park with representation from more than 21 Latin American and Caribbean countries. Year-round city events include 'Sunday Sounds' live-music evenings and community health and resource fairs at Samuel J. Ferreri Community Park.
What makes Greenacres distinct. The city's name was reportedly drawn from a hat as the winning entry in a naming contest. Greenacres briefly ceased to exist as a legal municipality between its 1945 dis-incorporation and 1947 reincorporation. It sits in a tropical monsoon climate zone, part of the only region in the contiguous 48 states with the Koppen 'Am' classification. The population roughly doubled during the 1980s, from about 8,780 residents to 18,683.
Greenacres is a diverse, largely residential city of roughly 44,000 people in Palm Beach County, the eighth largest municipality in the county. It maintains 11 parks over more than 93 acres.
