Greensboro is the seat of Guilford County and the anchor of North Carolina's Piedmont Triad, named for Revolutionary War general Nathanael Greene. A 19th-century railroad hub that became a textile powerhouse under the Cone brothers, it earned lasting fame on February 1, 1960, when four A&T students launched the Woolworth lunch-counter sit-in. Today it blends civil rights heritage, aircraft manufacturing, and a college-sports reputation that gave it the name 'Tournament Town.'

History. The city was named for Major General Nathanael Greene, commander of American forces at the Battle of Guilford Court House on March 15, 1781. During the final days of the Civil War in April 1865, Confederate President Jefferson Davis and his cabinet held meetings in Greensboro after fleeing Richmond.

Culture and community. The International Civil Rights Center & Museum occupies the former F.W. Woolworth store where the 1960 sit-ins began and is now a National Historic Landmark. North Carolina A&T State University students, the 'Greensboro Four,' were a major force in the civil rights movement. The acclaimed Eastern Music Festival brings a summer classical-music program to the city each year. The Greensboro Grasshoppers, a minor-league team with roots dating to 1902, play at downtown's First National Bank Field.
