Web Design for Grosse Pointe (City of Grosse Pointe), Michigan

Grosse Pointe is an affluent lakefront city on Lake St. Clair about nine miles northeast of downtown Detroit, one of five adjoining communities collectively called "the Pointes." Its French name means "large point," a reference to the land jutting into the lake, and it became Detroit's original elite commuter suburb between 1910 and 1930. Streets of neo-Georgian, Tudor Revival and Colonial homes surround the Kercheval Avenue shopping district known as "The Village."

About Grosse Pointe (City of Grosse Pointe)

Also known as. The Pointes (collective name for the five Grosse Pointe communities). Grosse Pointe City (used to distinguish the city from the four other Pointes).

History. The name is French for "large point," referring to the point of land extending into Lake St. Clair. Incorporated as a village in 1880 and as a city in 1934. Became heavily populated between 1910 and 1930 as Detroit's first commuter suburb, changing from cottages, resorts, farms and widely spaced lakefront mansions into a dense residential enclave. One of five Grosse Pointes along the lake: Grosse Pointe Park, Grosse Pointe (City), Grosse Pointe Farms, Grosse Pointe Woods and Grosse Pointe Shores.

Local economy. A high-income residential suburb that historically housed Detroit automobile executives and Gilded Age elite. "The Village" retail district along Kercheval Avenue is the shopping and cultural center serving all five Pointes. Home to University Liggett School, a long-established private K-12 institution.

Culture and community. Setting and namesake of the 1997 film Grosse Pointe Blank, and the backdrop of The Virgin Suicides, from Grosse Pointe native Jeffrey Eugenides' novel and Sofia Coppola's 1999 film. Notable figures connected to Grosse Pointe include singer Anita Baker, author Jeffrey Eugenides, baseball star Miguel Cabrera and actress Julie Harris. Two historic commercial districts anchor Pointes social life: "The Village" on Kercheval in the City and "The Hill" district in neighboring Grosse Pointe Farms.

What makes Grosse Pointe (City of Grosse Pointe) distinct. From roughly 1945 until its 1960 exposure, the Grosse Pointe Brokers Association ran a notorious "point system": a private investigator scored prospective home buyers out of 100 points on ancestry, ethnicity, accent, skin tone and occupation, with Anglo-Saxons needing 50 points, Poles 55, and applicants of African, Asian or other non-European ancestry scoring zero, which barred them from buying. The Ford House was built in an English Cotswold village aesthetic sometimes called "Storybook Style," with steep roofs, prominent gables and limestone masonry meant to look like a centuries-old manor. The Punch and Judy Theatre was deliberately built tiny, with only about 504 main-floor and 96 balcony seats, roughly one-tenth the size of the big Detroit movie palaces.

One-square-mile lakefront city on Lake St. Clair, incorporated as a village in 1880 and a city in 1934, whose Kercheval district serves as downtown for all five Grosse Pointes

Notable. Home of The Village, the central downtown shopping district for all five Grosse Pointe communities.
