History. The Grosse Pointe lakeshore was first farmed by French colonists in the 1750s in long 'ribbon farms' reaching back from the water, after France established Fort Pontchartrain at Detroit. From the 1850s wealthy Detroiters built lakefront summer homes here, and hunting, fishing, and golf clubs soon followed. The area incorporated as the Village of Grosse Pointe in 1879. In 1893 the portion east of Fisher Road broke away as the Village of Grosse Pointe Farms after a dispute over the location of a tavern. Grosse Pointe Farms became a city in 1949.
Local economy. Overwhelmingly residential and affluent, with the two largest employers being the Grosse Pointe Public School System and the Country Club of Detroit. Historically home to automotive-industry executives and heirs, including members of the Dodge and Ford families. Median household income was about $100,153 in 2000, with only around 2% of residents below the poverty line.

Notable residents have included Anna Thompson Dodge (widow of Horace Dodge), Ford heir Elena Ford, and Meg White of The White Stripes. Most of the city's roughly 12.3 square miles is water; only about 2.7 square miles is land, with the rest being Lake St. Clair.
