Web Design for Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan

Grosse Pointe Park is an affluent lakeshore suburb on Lake St. Clair, the southwesternmost of the five Grosse Pointe communities, bordering Detroit at Alter Road roughly seven miles east of downtown. It is known for its dense stock of pre-World War II, architect-designed homes, its residents-only Windmill Pointe Park on the lake, and a long, sometimes tense border relationship with Detroit. Its Kercheval commercial strip, called the Village, anchors local life.

About Grosse Pointe Park

Also known as. The Park. one of the Grosse Pointes / the Pointes.

History. The land began as French colonial ribbon farms settled as early as the 1740s along Lake St. Clair, later evolving into a summer resort area and then a year-round suburb. Development was set in motion when the Fairview Land Company laid out roughly 900 acres of former marshland beginning in 1896, in what was then Grosse Pointe Township. After Detroit annexed part of the village in 1907 (from Bewick Street to Alter Road), residents east of Alter Road, fearing further annexation, incorporated as the Village of Grosse Pointe Park later that same year. The community reincorporated as a city in 1950, seeking further protection from Detroit annexation and independence from the township.

Local economy. An affluent, largely residential suburb; around the 2000 census the median household income was about $105,000, with very low poverty rates. The economy is anchored by high-value residential real estate rather than industry. The Kercheval Avenue commercial district, the Village, provides local shops, restaurants, and services.

Culture and community. The Kercheval Village district is the main walkable commercial and social area. Windmill Pointe Park, a residents-only lakefront park, offers a pool, gym, movie theaters, and gathering space, including the Tompkins Community Center available for private events. Patterson Park provides a skating rink and walking trails. The Cabbage Patch, a northwest neighborhood of multi-family housing, grew from an early-1900s Belgian immigrant community of bakeries, butchers, and churches. Notable residents have included Grammy-winning singer Anita Baker, guitarist Mark Tremonti (Creed, Alter Bridge), and Kevin Barnes of the band of Montreal.

What makes Grosse Pointe Park distinct. In 2014 the city built a farmers-market shed structure that barricaded Kercheval Avenue at the Detroit border, blocking a main east-west road; the dispute grew heated enough that Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan publicly called Grosse Pointe Park council members liars before the barricade was removed at year's end. The Detroit border has featured multiple barricaded street corners and planters over the years, a visible marker of the divide between the two communities. Windmill Pointe Park is fenced and open only to residents, right up against the Detroit line. The Cabbage Patch neighborhood was historically a self-contained, walkable Belgian enclave, unusual among the single-family Grosse Pointes.

Westernmost Grosse Pointe, bordering Detroit, with walkable commercial streets on Kercheval, Jefferson, Charlevoix, and Mack and residents-only lakefront parks

Notable. Home of Windmill Pointe, the point where Lake St. Clair ends and the Detroit River begins.
