History. The area was part of Grosse Pointe Township, then Gratiot Township; German immigrant Casper Salter (born 1824) is recorded as the first settler in 1859. The main road, Harper Avenue, was named for Walter Harper, founder of Detroit's Harper Hospital; the "Woods" reflects the once-forested landscape. Population jumped from about 800 in 1940 to roughly 9,000 in 1950 during the postwar building boom. Harper Woods incorporated as a city on February 19, 1951, from what remained of Gratiot Township; the charter took effect October 29, 1951. Interstate 94 (the Edsel Ford Freeway) was routed through the eastern part of the city, approved in 1955. The 2020 census recorded 15,492 residents; the city saw a major demographic shift, with Black residents rising from about 10 percent in 2000 to nearly 66 percent in 2020.

Local economy. Eastland Center, opened in 1957 as one of the first outdoor malls in the Midwest, was the city's retail and tax anchor for decades before closing in 2021. After the mall's 2021 sale to NorthPoint Development, the 80-acre site was redeveloped as the Eastland Commerce Center, a three-building Class A warehouse, distribution, and manufacturing park expected to support around 560 permanent jobs.
