William Howell built the Haverford Mill, a gristmill, in 1685; the township stayed largely agricultural (wheat, oats, rye, corn, and dairy) into the early 20th century. The Nitre Hall powder mills were operating by 1810 and manufactured gunpowder during the War of 1812; Haverford was incorporated in 1911 and adopted a home-rule charter in 1977.
