Hesperia is a High Desert city in San Bernardino County spread along the Mojave River at roughly 3,200 feet of elevation. Born as an 1880s railroad town named for the evening star and reborn in a massive 1950s land sale bankrolled by boxing legend Jack Dempsey, it has grown into a fast-expanding commuter and logistics community on the I-15 corridor. It is also home to the world-renowned Cal-Earth Institute and its earthen dome architecture.

About Hesperia
Also known as. The Omaha of the West (1880s promotional nickname). High Desert city (regional identity). Part of the Victor Valley.
History. The Serrano people (Yuhaaviatam) lived here first, with the village of Wa'peat and others along the Mojave River into the early 1800s. The land was part of the 1781 Spanish-era grant Rancho San Felipe, Las Flores, y el Paso del Cajon. In 1885-1887 the California Southern Railroad (later the Santa Fe) built through the area and platted a town site; the town was named for Hesperus, the personification of the evening star and the 'west.' The Widney brothers, Joseph and Robert, formed the Hesperia Land and Water Company, built a large hotel, and laid out a town plan modeled on Ontario, California. In 1954, developer M. Penn Phillips and his silent partner, boxing champion Jack Dempsey, bought 23,000 acres and subdivided them into about 30,000 parcels, one of the largest land sales in California history. Hesperia incorporated as a city on July 1, 1988, with more than 82 percent of voters in favor.
Local economy. As of 2024 the largest industries were Transportation & Warehousing, Construction, and Retail Trade. The highest-paying local industries were Utilities, Public Administration, and Construction. Warehousing and logistics have grown along the Interstate 15 corridor linking the High Desert to Southern California's ports and metro markets. Functions in part as a commuter 'bedroom community' for the greater Inland Empire.
Culture and community. The annual Hesperia Days Festival features a parade, live entertainment, food vendors, and family activities. The Hesperia Lake Fishing Derby draws anglers from across the region. The city sits within the broader Route 66 heritage corridor of the High Desert, near the California Route 66 Museum in adjacent Victorville. Outdoor recreation, especially golf and lake fishing, is central to local identity.
What makes Hesperia distinct. The town's name honors Hesperus, the ancient Greek personification of the evening star, evoking a 'western land.' The 1954 land rush that shaped modern Hesperia was quietly financed by heavyweight boxing legend Jack Dempsey as a silent partner. Cal-Earth's earthen dome-building techniques have drawn interest for disaster relief and even off-world habitat concepts. Boosters once marketed Hesperia as 'the Omaha of the West,' comparing it to the fastest-growing U.S. city of the 1880s. At roughly 3,200 feet elevation, Hesperia has a cooler High Desert climate that sets it apart from the Los Angeles basin below the Cajon Pass.
High Desert city in the Victor Valley, about 35 miles north of San Bernardino, that grew from a rural settlement into a suburban community of roughly 100,000 residents.
