Web Design for Hoover, Alabama

Hoover is Alabama's largest suburb, a fast-growing commercial powerhouse straddling Jefferson and Shelby counties just south of Birmingham. Built atop the old Cahaba Coal Fields and named for insurance-company founder William H. Hoover, the city exploded from a residential bedroom community into a regional retail capital after the Riverchase Galleria opened in 1986. Today it is nationally known for hosting the SEC Baseball Tournament and for the MTV football docuseries that made Hoover High a household name.

AppWT works with Hoover, AL businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.

About Hoover

Also known as. Green Valley (the community's original name before incorporation). Alabama's largest suburban city.

History. Land sits above the Cahaba Coal Fields; first coal-mining attempt was in 1853, and Confederate demand accelerated mining in Jefferson County during the Civil War. The area was known as 'Green Valley' from the 1930s; it was named Hoover for William H. Hoover (1890-1979), owner of Employers Insurance of Alabama, who became the first mayor. Incorporated as a city on April 28, 1967. Annexed the Riverchase business district on September 8, 1980, a move that transformed the city's tax base and commercial trajectory. The Riverchase Galleria opened February 19, 1986, instantly making Hoover a regional shopping destination. Grew into Alabama's 6th-largest city, with a 2020 census population of 92,606.

Local economy. Regions Bank is the top employer (about 2,644 workers), followed by Hoover City Schools (1,869) and Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Alabama (1,711). AT&T Alabama (about 1,170) and Walmart/Sam's Club (about 950) round out the largest employers. The Riverchase Galleria anchors the economy: at 1.9 million square feet it is Alabama's largest enclosed shopping center, and includes the 15-story Hyatt Regency Birmingham-The Wynfrey Hotel and Galleria Tower office building. Identity shifted over the 20th century from an agrarian/coal-mining community to a suburban retail and corporate hub, spurred by the Interstate 459 interchange.

Culture and community. Home of Hoover High School's Buccaneers, one of the most successful football programs in Alabama. MTV's reality series 'Two-A-Days: Hoover High' (premiered August 23, 2006) followed the Buccaneers under coach Rush Propst over two seasons. Hosts the SEC Baseball Tournament every May at the Hoover Met (since 1998), drawing more than 150,000 fans a year. The Birmingham Barons minor-league team played at the Hoover Met from 1988 to 2013 before moving downtown to Birmingham.

What makes Hoover distinct. Hoover High's football team was the subject of a national MTV docuseries, unusual for a suburban high school. The city literally sits on top of a coal bed (the Cahaba Coal Fields), where mining dates to 1853. Moss Rock Preserve's boulder field draws rock climbers from across the Southeast and contains an extremely rare variant of Little River Canyon sandstone glade. The SEC Baseball Tournament has been played in Hoover, not on any conference campus, since 1998.
