History. Organized in 1827, the original township was enormous, containing land that is now Romulus, Belleville, Van Buren, and Sumpter. Nearby forests held a Wyandot (Wyandotte) Indian reservation from 1818 until the late 1840s, when the tribe was relocated to Kansas. Romulus Township split off in 1835, Van Buren Township in 1835, and Sumpter Township in 1840. A post office opened as 'Catville' around 1860 and was renamed New Boston by 1868. Willow was platted in 1857 (originally 'Belden,' by Frances J. Belden); Waltz was platted in 1872 by Joseph Waltz. The Pere Marquette Railroad reached the township in the 1870s, powering a farm economy; by 1915 auto factories had lured many farmers to Detroit and the villages declined. The Waltz Road-Huron River Bridge was built in 1924, rebuilt in 2017, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Local economy. A bedroom community for metro Detroit that retains an agricultural base, including sod production, nurseries, and greenhouse stock. Part of the Downriver region, an informal group of 18 communities along the Detroit River south of the city. Logistics and light-industrial development have grown along the Interstate 275 corridor.
Culture and community. The Huron Township Applefest, held each October in downtown New Boston, is the township's signature event, with a parade, carnival, vendors, and live music; proceeds are returned to the community. Three Huron-Clinton Metroparks within the township make it a regional outdoor-recreation destination. The St. John's Waltz Applefest 5K/10K run follows a paved trail along the Huron River through Lower Huron Metropark.
