Keizer is a Willamette Valley city that hugs the north edge of Salem in Marion County, best known worldwide for the rainbow iris fields grown just beyond its limits. It only became its own city in 1982, when residents voted to incorporate rather than be swallowed by Salem, and it retains a tight-knit, festival-and-baseball civic character. Every spring the town erupts in bloom for its signature iris celebration.

About Keizer
Also known as. Iris Capital of the World.
History. Named for pioneer Thomas Dove Keizur, who arrived in the Wagon Train of 1843; the spelling changed to 'Keizer' through a misspelling in donation land claim records. Early settlement at low-lying 'Keizer Bottom' near the Willamette River was pushed to higher ground after damaging floods, including in 1861. Incorporated as a city on November 2, 1982, after residents voted to form their own city instead of being annexed by Salem. The Keizer Days Parade began June 24, 1950, organized by the Keizer Commercial Club; it was renamed the Keizer Iris Festival Parade in 1988. The Keizer City Council formally designated the city the 'Iris Capital of the World' on December 7, 1987.
Local economy. Iris cultivation is the signature industry; Schreiner's Iris Gardens, one of the largest retail iris growers in the U.S., relocated its family business to the Keizer area from Minnesota in 1947. Largely a bedroom community and retail center adjoining Salem, Oregon's capital. Keizer Station, a large retail development, anchors commercial activity. With roughly 39,000 residents, Keizer ranks among Oregon's larger cities while lacking heavy industry of its own.
Culture and community. KeizerFEST (formerly the Iris Festival) each May features a parade, carnival rides, craft vendors, a car show, and a 5K. Minor-league-style baseball is a civic touchstone through the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes at Volcanoes Stadium. Iris blooms are a communal springtime draw, with Schreiner's fields open to the public. Community identity centers on being an independent small city that chose self-governance over absorption by Salem.
What makes Keizer distinct. After being dropped from affiliated MLB baseball in the 2020 reorganization, the Volcanoes founded their own Mavericks Independent Baseball League in 2021, whose four teams all play in the same Keizer stadium, including a revived Portland Mavericks. Journey and former Ozzy Osbourne drummer Deen Castronovo is from Keizer. AND1 streetball legend Grayson 'The Professor' Boucher grew up in Keizer. U.S. Senator Charles L. McNary, Wendell Willkie's 1940 vice-presidential running mate, is a native son. The city's spelling exists only because a clerk misspelled pioneer Thomas Keizur's surname.
