Kingsport, 'The Model City,' sits on the Holston River in Northeast Tennessee's Tri-Cities region and is one of the earliest professionally planned, privately financed cities in 20th-century America. Laid out in 1917 by celebrated planner John Nolen and built around industry, it remains the corporate home of Eastman Chemical Company. Its frontier roots as an 18th-century boatyard on the westward migration route still shape its riverside historic district.

About Kingsport
Also known as. The Model City.
History. The site was the head of navigation on the Holston River, home in the late 1700s to King's Boat Yard, from which the name Kingsport derives; it was a launching point for settlers heading west. Two adjacent towns, Christianville and Rossville, were laid out in the early 1800s and merged; the community was chartered as King's Port / Kingsport in 1822. During the Civil War, the Battle of Kingsport (December 13, 1864) saw about 300 Confederates briefly resist a far larger Union force. The modern 'Model City' was created as an offshoot of the Carolina, Clinchfield & Ohio Railway; land was bought in 1916 and Massachusetts planner John Nolen designed the city. Incorporated in 1917, reportedly the first Tennessee municipality organized under a city-manager / board-of-mayor-and-aldermen government, and cited as the first economically diversified, professionally planned, privately financed U.S. city of the 20th century.
Local economy. Eastman Chemical Company is headquartered in Kingsport and operates its original and largest manufacturing site here, employing on the order of 6,500 people. Major employers also include Ballad Health's Holston Valley Medical Center and large industrial operators, supporting a metro economy with a gross product around $14 billion. Long identified as a 'City of Industry' with a manufacturing and chemicals base rooted in its planned-city origins. Anchors the Kingsport-Bristol metropolitan area within the broader Tri-Cities (Kingsport-Johnson City-Bristol) region.
Culture and community. Fun Fest, a nine-day summer festival launched in 1981, draws roughly 100,000 people for concerts, hot-air balloons, fireworks, and community events. The Santa Train, running since 1943, tosses gifts to Appalachian communities along the old Clinchfield rail line, with Kingsport as the final stop. Home of Pal's Sudden Service, a regional drive-through chain founded in Kingsport in 1956 that in 2001 became the first restaurant company to win the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. Baseball heritage: the Kingsport Axmen play collegiate summer ball in the Appalachian League, continuing a pro/amateur baseball tradition dating to the 1920s.
What makes Kingsport distinct. Local lore claims the Long Island Iced Tea cocktail was invented in the Kingsport area in the 1920s by a Prohibition-era distiller nicknamed 'Old Man Bishop.' In 1916 a traveling circus elephant named Mary, after killing a handler, was publicly hanged by a railroad crane in nearby Erwin, an event tied to Kingsport's circus stop. Kingsport is one of the clearest surviving examples of the early-20th-century planned 'garden city' movement in the United States. The city literally grew up around a railroad and a chemical plant rather than evolving organically from a village.
Kingsport is a planned 'Model City' laid out in the early 20th century using a garden-city design. It anchors the Tri-Cities region and is home to the Eastman Chemical Company headquarters, its largest employer.
